I am so, so glad China is moving away from that and working towards a low pressure society. A high pressure society is just pure permanent misery for everyone, no matter how high the income.

But Koreans as well as Japanese argue that they have no other option but to have this 'high pressure' society bcs of their small size and lack of natural resources making Human Resources their only and main resource to fall back on.

True, but that's not sustainable in the long run. Physically, they've become highly dependent on oil, even more than the US. 30% of their energy comes from oil, vs. 25% for the US and 15% for China. Any rise in oil prices squeezes their living standards heavily.

Psychologically, people can't stand it for very long. Japanese actually don't work that hard anymore. The average hours for a Japanese worker per year now is less than an American worker, while it was much greater in the 70's and 80's. That's because Japan has a 50% labor participation rate, one of the lowest in the world. Alot of Japanese youth just drop out of society and do nothing but live on parents money.

Well if according to an article I read sometime ago, frustrated at the whole Feminism and other pressures American males are also doing somewhat same......dropping out out of society.Explains the falling percentage of male graduates in US universities.
