US’ betrayal: What are the options left for Pakistan?

Itfa Khurshid Mirza |

Donald Trump’s speech at the Riyadh Summit in Saudi Arabia has become the talk of the town. Choosing Saudi Arabia as the first country to begin his foreign visits has a lot to unveil about Trump’s strategic motives. If we analyze the crux of his address to over 50 heads of Islamic states, it was more of cajolery loaded with excessive praise for Middle Eastern countries to further own interests of course. In addition, it was kind of a ‘to do list’ for Islamic states, from combating extremist ideology, vanquishing the forces of terrorism, or stopping financing terrorist groups.

He didn’t even bother to mention Pakistan. Probably, Pakistan was a nuisance here among the states which were likely to go in arms trade agreements to benefit U.S weapons industry.

Both the U.S and Saudi Arabia signed an agreement of $110 billion of defense purchase in order to strengthen Saudi military. This is an approach of principled realism involving shared interests. Trump also referred the Summit as the beginning of peace in the Middle East followed by the peace in the world. He admired the role of the Middle Eastern states in combating terrorism and extremism in the region. This urged to look into the past statements of the ‘unpresidential’ President Donald Trump when every single speech included the key term ‘Radical Islamic terrorism’.

Options on the table for Pakistan
In his honeyed words of appreciation, he also showed concern for the Muslim countries which suffered as a result of ongoing terrorist wave globally. Countries he specifically mentioned were Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, United Arab Emirates and on top of the list Saudi Arabia. He didn’t even bother to mention Pakistan. Probably, Pakistan was a nuisance here among the states which were likely to go in arms trade agreements to benefit U.S weapons industry. Trump’s visit and speech left a food for thought for Pakistani policymakers.

Trump has rendered U.S past foreign policy as rudderless, ineffective, and unreliable and based his new foreign policy on experience and judgment and the policies which didn’t work in the past.

Pakistan was the sole Islamic nuclear state in the Islamic Summit. The way it was treated and silenced at such a notable forum is a matter of grave concern particularly after being given the command of Islamic alliance, that too delegated from Saudi Arabia. This entire scenario has far-reaching consequences on the role that Pakistan has to play in the newly created theater of ‘Global Centre for Combating Extremist Ideology’. A total snub of Pakistan even raised the question of whether it will be entrusted with any responsibility in the new emerging geo-strategic environment?

Before proceeding further, this is what President Trump said to PM Nawaz Sharif on a telephonic conversation after winning presidential elections in January 2017: ‘I am ready and willing to play any role that you want me to play to address and find solutions to outstanding issues’. This is a huge shift in U.S foreign policy towards Pakistan. Trump has rendered U.S past foreign policy as rudderless, ineffective, and unreliable and based his new foreign policy on experience and judgment and the policies which didn’t work in the past.

Keeping in view the entire scenario Pakistan also needs to make a shift in its foreign policy in order to regain the status of a significant ally. Pakistan has been in the limelight since five decades due to the U.S interest in Afghanistan and now focus is being shifted to the Middle East.

First of all i do not understand how is it a betrayal ? If the US decide that Pakistan does not fit into its plans , its more a failure of Pakistanis foreign policies for not making them selfs more visible.

Or is it USA loosing Pakistan to China and Russia ? i think world Geo-political game is changing alot and USA is loosing a big player ...

The first mistake is you thinking you are a big player. The second is to think just because you have nukes you should be invited to the big table, the fact is you guys were unable to sell your selfs as integral parts of trumps new policies.

Typical of Pakistani sources and individuals to blame other states for ignoring/sidelining Pakistan in a global summit. How about some introspection and recognizing the need to revisit our foreign policy?

Or is it USA loosing Pakistan to China and Russia ? i think world Geo-political game is changing alot and USA is loosing a big player ...
I don't get the mention of Russia. China is a beneficiary of CPEC but Russia is unlikely to embrace it in the same way due to its geography and relations with India. Don't expect much from Russia.

Question is what Pakistan offers to the US beyond the dimension of War on Terror? Any significant defense-related and/or economic deals for the US?

Pakistan was the sole Islamic nuclear state in the Islamic Summit.

Thats THE BIGGEST PROBLEM.

1. Forget that you have Nukes. Nukes have No Place in Diplomacy especially with Powers like US.
2. Now You are Naked, Think of Whats there that Really matters : Good Leaders, Foreign Policy, Economy , Infra , Education Etc..... Do It.

Pakistan was always closer to China, and current geopolitics dictate that this is so. Let's be honest, Pakistan-US relations were never close as some made it out to be. It was mostly transactional.

The first mistake is you thinking you are a big player. The second is to think just because you have nukes you should be invited to the big table, the fact is you guys were unable to sell your selfs as integral parts of trumps new policies.

I have seen several Pakistan news anchors and analysts on say this repeatedly: we are the only Muslim nuclear power and should be treated with respect. Just proves that having nukes is not enough to get respect. What benefit does the Muslim world get with Pakistan's nukes? Bragging rights? Those nukes are for Pakistan-only and are India-specific.

Indians members here are advised to stop all this bulshit, a pakistani general is heading the alliance for which this summit took place hence in essence our establishment is at the head of all this.

Secondly, this is textbook pakistani foriegn policy as civilian leaders like nawaz are seldom given respect in foriegn nations who always think the decision making power in pakistan lies with military leaders hence they woo and respect them.

This was not about economics etc as Pakistan is the only muslim nation besides turkey which actually has a chance of achieving economic prosperity in the near future due to massive projects like cpec etc.

Now let me educate u what this snub at summit was about, the arab islamic world highly depends upon the Us for its security and they know too well that trump is all set to counter china in asia and ME and Pakistan is now officialy in China's camp so they were all acting to please their yankee lords. The deeply entwined economic and defence collaboration has made it so. We no longer depend on the Us for defence needs hence we said goodbye to them un officialy by completely going into china's camp hence it makes hostile to Us interests in south china sea and the Us goals to curtail and limit spreading Chinese global clout.

Moreover Pakistan double crossed and outmanoveured the Us in afghanistan by suporting and controlling the taliban insurgency in afghanistan hence the yanks when they discovered this are now frustrated and angry over the fact that we f ucked them over when they had plans to f uck us all along, the bullies got bullied in afghanistan and they didnt like it.

The Us hence now considers pakistan a threat to their interests and influence in asia and will try to use and support india as much as they can against china and pakistan.

The indians should stop jumping up and down due to the recent american suport to u cause the yanks have a long standing habit of making one feel like cideralla on a teenage date when they need you yet will dump you that quickly too when thier goals are achieved or they no longer need you.

Time to say, Thank you US.

Time to say, no to aid from anyone..including the US.

Time to stand on own two feet.

If Pak expect anything from anyother state then the disappointment will be Pak's own doing.

Just Act in National Interests of Pak and see how Respect follows...

When Pak acts in this way the beeline of foreign leaders in Islamabad will be quite long...

Put Pak First!

You are severely mistaken to think that Pakistan belongs in the Trump/US/Saudi camp to begin with. We don't belong in these camps.

We have established our own camp with China. The rest doesn't matter to us one bit. We know why sobs and cries day and night about this camp.

does the Kunduz airlift ring a bell? its not a one way street - everyone looking for their own interests. I still hope that Pakistan and USA remain allies.. but that needs work from both sides.. as of now there is a lot more mistrust.

this is very true - the biggest partner for Pakistan is China right now.. not KSA/USA. and it looks to be that ways for the foreseeable future.
