All threads that bound the post world war order seem to have given way one after another. A difficult but deliberate entente, the memories and wounds of previous conflict, ever greater weapons, precision and of course the economic impact have been the deterrents avoiding a larger conflict. That however has come to a head, it seems. To back off from here for Russia after break-up of Soviet Union would not only be another defeat but carte blanche for NATO to push the envelope... a security alliance that binds all at the doorstep of Moscow. Remember the Russian weapon systems philosophy uses exactly these vast terrains as a levarage in an expansive conflict. Their huge planes with even greater rcs and ultra long distance missile defense uses again the vastness of terrain to protect and project power.

That being said... Putin has himself previously expressed how the break up of Soviet Union was a tragedy and loss of historical Russia... As Biden himself pointed out, Putin has boxed himself in... either accept his position in the transient new order or shifting/drifting sands that will keep pushing him down as in at the expense of Russia, or,
