The US State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale of up to 24 Beechcraft T-6C+ Texan II turboprop trainer/light attack aircraft to Argentina, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on 3 August.

The estimated USD300 million sale aims to replace the Argentine Air Force's ageing advanced trainers, which now include only a handful airworthy aircraft from an original 30 Embraer EMB-312 Tucanos purchased from Brazil in 1987.

The US proposal, based on an Argentine government request, would contain spare engines and parts, aircraft ferry and support, maintenance training, ground-based training systems, and training for Argentine technicians.

According to the DSCA, the proposed sale would "revitalise Argentina's capability to train its pilots and fulfill border control missions, especially along its porous northern border. The Argentine Air Force [AAF] will use the enhanced capability to redevelop a professional pilot corps and as a deterrent to illicit activity."
