US-Afghanistan supply lines remain open after Pakistan funding cut, Mattis says

Pre-emptive comment this ... US knows that any further action will lead to suspension of supplies via Pakistan hence this.

If supplies wasn't such a major concern this comment wouldn't have come.

Expect a quiet payment in coming weeks.

Very wrong interpretations, conclusions and assertions; I must say.

You have totally forgot that, whenever US has made deals with Pakistan in the past (be it Russia in Afgh or after 9/11), there was a military ruler in Pakistan. Naturally, a military ruler had limited room to negotiate and surrendered early to the US demands.

Now, although the military in Pakistan is still calling the shots, but there is an elected govt. on the front scene. Therefore, the leverages and the options are very different.

Include in this equation the Chinese and the Russian factor.

Pakistan army has much more manoeuvrability now compared to anytime in the past.

I agree with your analysis more than that of this Falcon26 guy, who may have some sympathy for Pakistan but is condescending and often wrong.

Here are some facts: On 9/11, Pakistan had NO CHOICE but to blindly follow American policies. America was a raging bull then. Come on, think through what might have happened had Pakistan 'shown the spine' then? You should know that India was overtly offering its help to America then and most of the world would accept the destruction of Pakistan in case of a hot war.

Some more facts.

Pakistan's basic problem is Pakistan's unwinnable competition against India. Yes, it's a bitter pill to swallow but facts are facts. Most Pakistan is able to do is to ward off India in a defensive posture; thanks to Pakistan's political upheavals and economic meltdowns for decades, that's all Pakistan can achieve for now.

But, since 9/11, Pakistan has managed to survive, gotten some high tech weapons from America and even some real $ in aid, has made the political setup more stable, has greatly improved in judiciary independence, has maintained a free press, has made inroads in Baluchistan, has battle hardened its security services, has largely crushed terrorism inside, has a greater sense of national unity, with less ethnic divide than before, and has an ongoing economic revival with China's full backing...

Yes, there was a heavy price to pay. But Pakistan is still far better than Syria or Libya or Iraq where Uncle Sam's Freedom and Democracy is for the world to see.

Let's be objective instead of the constant breast beating!!

I think this is great move by Pakistan —give the US enough room to throw their egotistical tantrums but at the same time keep control of the situation by remaining steadfast on the bottom lines, by which , our long term interests. The deep-state has to be cold and calculating. The emotions are for the public and the politicians.

Block NATO supplies, support Taliban, make a new bloc with China-Iran-Russia-Pakistan, change dollar to Yuan as trading currency, built IP gas pipeline, bring new Islamic System in Pakistan, and review US-Pakistan relations and actively start thinking of US as no1 enemy in world.
