I wish he was acknowledged for his massive service to Urdu literature since he was the pioneer of modern mystery fiction. He is the only Urdu novelist in the mystery genre who was multi dimensional, original, creative and extremely nuanced. His characters, major as well as minor, were not mere caricatures. They were living, breathing individuals one could relate to.
Even the main protagonists weren't perfect but had flawed and layered personalities which made them all the more relatable, lifelike and appealing. His humor was neither crass nor overly polished to only convey what his audience wanted to hear. His humor (chutkulay) was so fresh and an organic extension of each of his individual characters that distinguished them from the rest.
His novels weren't overtly didactic where they would compromise on the entertaining spirit of his fiction. He included some extremely pertinent issues still plaguing us that made him ahead of his time in many ways. We can find serious concerns in his work like white supremacy, Nazism, extremism, sexual abuse of women, mental health crisis like masochism and sadism, racial supremacy, lust for wealth and power and many societal injustices that created monstrous villains in his novels.
There have been mystery writers before him as well as those who later stole his characters to make a buck for themselves, but nobody will ever create the magic Ibn e Safi sahab did. Even as an adult, I still read his novels with the same passion and love since they're my comfort books.
He will forever be the undisputed champion of mystery/suspense fiction in Urdu literature. No one has or can even come close. I wish we start owning this creative genius and start acknowledging him more than the likes of Agatha Christie whom he was creatively much superior to. May Allah bless him with jannat ul firdous.
Ameen.
