UK restaurant boss asks fellow businessmen to sell Pakistani cuisine with pride

Prior to 1947 there was a tiny, tiny population of South Asians and restaurents serving 'Asian' foof were almost unkown. Only after 1950s with mass migration, mostly males was a demand created for 'Asian' food. By 1960s every neighourhood in UK with large migrant population had cafes that serviced the migrant workers. By early 1970s some of the British began to eat 'Indian' and by early 1980s having a 'Indian' had become established.

So the building up of this began way after partition.

Off course Punjabi, Pashtun, balochi, kahsmiri food which we identified as Pakistani food now was not invented in 1947...regional cultural identity whether language/dress/food/music existed way before 1947 national geographic identity i.e Pakistan....see even our national poet used to sing " Sare jhaan se acha Hindustan humara" back then our leaders and founder of Pakistan used to study in England and there were generation which was settled in UK before 80s and established business in there including food chain.

Yeah. It's strange because the first big restaurantuers in the UK were Bengalis, but the white people knew curry as "Indian" and first generation immigrant from places like Syhlet or Mirpur had no understanding of the value of brand or the ideals of identity - they just went with it.

This should have changed by the 90's, but people are idiots. Afraid of placing themselves somewhere unique in the marketplace, afraid thier customer base won't recognise or associate with Pakistani as a brand. Also a big lack of self respect.

You see a change nowadays as youngsters opening up places now are doing it trying to get the edge on each other, new angles and looking at the middle class Pakistani market too. You don't need the drunk gora hordes to run a successful restaurant now.

I have visited London a number of times during my travels. Whenever I go there, I always have sought out "Pakistani" restaurants. I found it difficult to identify when searching for Pakistani restaurants, because they always carry the tag line, "Indian Cusine, or Authentic Indian Cusine". Upon inquiring at one of the restaurants, I found out the food was Pakistani, the owner of the restaurants were Pakistani, the staff was Pakistani, yet the restaurant board outside said indian cuisine. When I asked the owner, he said, well title it because everyone else does it. So I asked a question (rhetorical), that if everyone jumped into the english channel, would he do the same? He had no answer. I even told him that I had almost not entered his restaurant because it said indian cuisine. Because I was looking to eat food which is Pakistani, and if wanted indian food, I would've gone to an indian restaurant (as if). And I have to say, this one of the most disgusting attitudes or approach I have come across my travels in London. No where else in the world have Pakistanis done this, not in Malaysia, not in America, not in Turkey, or anywhere else I have visited. I hope that Pakistanis living in this tiny island country of britain, show that they are Muslim first, as a consequence of which, a Pakistani and after which, you can add whatever the heck their britishness means. Don't you ever forget who you are, a MUSLIM FIRST, due which you are PAKISTANI. Everything else, has little to no consequence or meaning for you. No matter which part of the world you may live in or undertake business ventures.

You are kidding me, right? A Muslim is a Muslim first, regardless of their nationality. A non-Muslim residing in a Muslim country, does so because they can practice their faith in peace and are not persecuted or oppressed. The State is Islamic, which means that Allah is the ONE, the ABSOLUTE sovereign. Non-Muslims will remain in peace, and it is the duty of all Muslims to protect fellow Muslims and non-Muslims that reside in an Islamic State. Jews have sought refuge in Muslim states, after being expelled by the Romans and were welcomed by Muslims in their lands, for centuries. Someone ought tell the godless, remorseless, terrorist israelis that, when the slaughter innocent Palestinians. Christians too have lived in peace in the Holy Land which Muslims ruled for centuries. So of course non-Muslims be who they are, as identified by their faith.

Dear Mr Raza I'd like to commend you on your work and I'm sorry you have come across some self-hating folks but hundreds of Pakistani restaurants proudly proclaim themselves Pakistani and have been selling authentic Pakistani cuisine for decades before you came.
In fact some of the biggest names in South Asian cooking full stop have always been known to all as Pakistani;

Here are some;

TKC Southall

They have their own Pakistani bus;

Giftos Lahore Karahi;

Legends Tayyabs London;

Mumtaz Bradford;

Lahore Kebab House Whitechapel;

Man I could go on and on and on, but I have to wake up for fasting. I have eaten in hundreds of Pakistani establishments, not one has ever called itself Indian.

I am not aware of many Pakistani restaurants proudly naming themselves as Indian restaurant in UK but I guess it is true outside London, Birmingham, Manchester and few other major cities.

The only name comes to my mind which openly claims to be Indian restaurant is Royal Nawaab

LOL - Name of city matters little as no-one outside the S Asian community in UK has a clue about the difference.

Not many Pakistani restaurants actually call themselves Pakistani to make it explicitly clear

Plenty of BD'shi owned restaurants in the UK have names like Anando Mahal, Deshi Spice Restaurant, Bengal Restaurant etc. which have no "Indian" in the name whatsoever.

Another one of your "weapons" against BD people totally destroyed.
