U.S. suspends cooperation on jet engine technology with India

Money cannot buy you real high tech, seriously. What can be sold are always a step below(military).

i agree with you...At the end of the day, we have to invest on our education system and reserch&develooment activity to build complex system

No country will part with such a critical technology even by paying huge money and why would they loose a future customer

US suspends cooperation on jet engine tech

India and the United States have suspended cooperation on jet engine technology under the Defense Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) that seeks to deepen bilateral cooperation and identify opportunities for sharing of high-end defence technologies, a senior Pentagon official revealed on Thursday.

The US export controls is one of the reasons for dropping the cooperation on jet engine technology, she said.

Under the 2012 DTTI, India and the US set up joint working groups (JWGs) for cooperation on aircraft carriers and jet engine technology.

“The original project (jet engine technology) we have is suspended right now but we are talking about other potential engine working groups. We could not come to an understanding of what exportable technologies will be useful to India and we did run into a challenge in terms of US export controls,” said Ellen Lord, the US under secretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment.

She was interacting with a small group of reporters after holding talks with secretary (defence production) Subhash Chandra at the 9th DTTI group meeting held here. She said there was an enormous amount of aircraft technology that India and the US could work on together. “I know that in the past, there have been frustrations with progress under DTTI, but I can assure you that we are making considerable progress.”

She said the two sides had come a long way since the JWG format began in 2015. “The JWG co-chairs are working hard to show progress on current projects and identify new ones. The technologies that they are discussing are significant...”

She also said that India and the US had agreed to a joint statement of intent (SOI) that would deepen defence technology cooperation and interoperability consistent with shared national security interests.

Air Vice Marshal Manmohan Bahadur (retd), additional director general, Centre for Air Power Studies, said, “It would have been over optimistic to expect the Americans to give us high-end engine technology — no one parts with such strategic know-how. We must go for realistic technologies that we lack -- and there are many such techs which the US can give.”

was there any sort of cooo00ooperartion with america for jet engine , huh ? lol tamasha dekh fakira .

Related to India's S-400 request? I wouldn't be surprised
Irrelevant. USA never gave any technology to India even before 2016. USA even denied selling the ARROW BMD to India (even without TOT) for fear of reverse engineering.

India as usual over-estimates its importance. First , they dropped out of russian 5th generation program because Ruskis refused to share critical technology(TOT) with India , despite India heavily investing it. Now , the Americans have refused them as well in jet technology.

Critical technology of avionics , engines and missiles are state secrets that nobody would share no matter how many howdy modi events are organised.
There is no over estimation. India simply does not need anything else. India already makes Kaveri engine (though it is just 81kN and hence insufficient for Tejas) and Al31FP engine. India is capable of developing newer engines if time of 10-12 year is spent on design. India is trying to get shortcuts through TOT deals and save this time. If not, possible, then there is no need to import in urgency. India would rather make the engines via inhouse R&D

Don't be surprised if those Apaches and others get hit by sanctions.
Apaches are not critical weapons. USA benefits more than India by getting money. India has no real need for Apache and can make do with LCH & ALH. Apache is bought due to USA pressure to reduce trade surplus

No surprises there.
Strategic allies (according to some Indian posters). :(
Strategic "partner", not allies. India is not allied with USA

But but, india is hyper important to USA. Indians worship DJ Trump for his islamophobic stance...
India is important does not mean USA will give its technology.

India doesnt need engine co-operation with the USA, i mean didnt India get all the tech transfer they needed including single crystal blade technology from Russia as part of the Su30MKI deal?
India already makes AL3FP as well as Kaveri engine. But these are older generation ones. India is seeking to develop newer generation 110kN engine. India needs lot of design time for it and is trying to cut it short by technology transfer, if possible. There is no desperation

We need to unite in Asia to develop this critical tech and then share with each other. Only China is doing anything. West have 150 years head start on jet engine when rest of the world was still colonized.
Don't worry India will share the engine tech with Pakistan after knowing how.
No surprises there.
Strategic allies (according to some Indian posters). :(
They did choose India as strategic ally, probably after 27th February they went back to drawing board to reconsider it. The decisions coming from the USA doesn't indicate anything else

It does seem like 27th Feb was game changer. US crackers thinking how India will help us against China when they cannot even put in place Pakistan. Despite full support from US in 27th Feb for India to "punish" Pakistan.

After that Afghan peace process started without any involvement of India and so on. Its not just one off thing here, seem to be change in US policy.

Lol that was the final nail. Anyway this has been part of US policy for quite some time. They expected India to be confrontational with China, that hasn't happened hence all the roll back. Many of the Indians are starting to wake up now, before some were writing on here that the US will send carrier groups to destroy China with the IN, that India and US will launch joint terror strikes on Pakistan etc. The delusion of these idiots knows no bounds.

You want to include Ganga desh in this endeavor?

You are playing with words, the two are connected.
No, in common tongue, it may appear like playing with words bit in language of international affairs, these differences are huge. It means that India and USA is partnering on strategic issues of current times but don't have long term common agenda to be called as ally

Fair enough.

Nah! Quite impossible the US would ever share jet engine tech with any nation that do not have the tech already.

Stealing works well I guess.

There is a surprise, never knew there was plans for sharing jet Engine tech from US. Like Duh obviously they weren't going to share it.

Even to steal , you need brains that gangus clearly lack. Besides , developing cyber espionage capabilities is an art itself.

It is actually the opposite.. Indians are selling vedic hanuman technology to russians.
