U.S. gives Mumbai police equipment to fight terror

Actually @Zarvan is making a good point.

In the event of a Mumbai style terror attack, the innocent casualties happen at the first 30 minutes of the attack began. Ref.(CST station & Taj). The first 30 minutes they kill maximum people 'up opposed'. If every policeman have a side arm(at least in all cities in India), he can at least shoot down one terrorist. Why should we rely on the reaction time of our armed police?
An the old 303 should immediately change to INSAS everywhere in the police force.

Why should we rely on the reaction time of our armed police?

1.) The disadvantages of arming each cop with sidearms outweigh your point.... Large scale terror attacks like 26/11 are fortunately something very rare and unprepared normal cops will have slim chances against well trained attackers. But the real problem is to arm a police force, which is among the most incompetent and corrupt police forces in a democratic country...... and thats something which has sadly become part of our daily lives. Sure, some states have better ones, but in general, I doubt its a good idea to give each cop a firearm.

2.) According to offcials from the Mumbai PD and the NSG, the response time of police units during 26/11 was always very short! In fact they often arrived within minutes after the first calls.... the problem was however, that they were neither trained nor equipped to tackle the situation. So having proper equipment and several teams trained to hold their ground in such a situation over the cities police stations should be enough and makes more sense than arming our Indian (!) cops with firearms.

PS: I got that from a documentary, it was posted on PDF a couple of weeks ago, but cant remember it anymore.

1. The Coordinated large scale attacks are rare but their targets are rather predictable, where you can have normal police with machines guns. Remember our guys fought with Kasab and team with 303. If they had AK or INSAF, the story would have been different,
2. There is always gonna be a delay for reaction, unless you keep them very near. Cops with AKs arrived at Nariman house very soon, but could not enter there coz the terrorists already settled inside the building. There you need a swat team.

Equipments yes it needs upgrading. Can equip every police wala ??? No because if you do that which means you are declaring a war in yeh city because every rouge criminal then carry a weapon because his enemy (policeman) is carrying one.
These situations ask for strategy

Well than now it would be fun to fight them will meet them soon by the way are these for all policeman or few

You have been saying that ever since you joined the forum. Why don't you man up for once and come to India and try your luck at jihad?

Debatable...... automatic weapons would have evened the odds.... but they could have never guaranteed that those railway cops could have beaten them. Anyways, state police forces have already started to replace their old Enfield rifles with INSAS, Kalashnikov and even older FN FAL rifles.

Every police station has firearms and cops patrolling selected areas do carry weapons on patrol (railway stations, markets etc). That should be enough for now. Whats more important are deep police reforms for the entire police force.

Terrorist attacks of this scale pertains to an issue of national security, which has been included under the Union list. Whereas, law and order is a state subject, thus, the responsibility lying with the state govt. Both are involved in playing the blame game, though I personally see it as a failure on part of the state government.

I don't see any dire need of equipping each and every policeman with arms. But, those who are equipped, should be equipped and trained well enough to neutralize such threats. There have been several reports of policemen 'evading' and choosing not to confront the terrorists, partially due to not being well equipped, and lack of training as well, in the 26/11 case.

And when the central govt. proposes a unified anti terror bill for the entire nation, the state govts are the first to object to it, citing it as a threat to the 'federal structure'. (NCTC) Besides, some states have reportedly been unable to exhaust the funds provided to them for the modernization of the police force/anti terror squads. Now that calls for an admonishment.

Exactly if next time better trained and equipped guys come and your police man have nothing good than they can cause real great damage again and you would be again discussing crap once again so equip them or don't blame us
