According to them, the last fews of the Type 052C are the transition model towards the Type 052D.

. . .
So the last few will incorporate a few systems such as universal VLS?

Yep, it seems to be the thing that they have mentioned before.

BTW, the tonnage about the new coming Type 052D is too controversial.

A post on the Internet mentioned that the 052D will feature only 6800 tons while another article claims that China is building a 10000+ ton destroyer.

There is nothing to be controversial about 052D's tonnage. The Type number is determined by the ship hull and more basically decided by the engines and power system that used to propel that hull to a speed of 30 knots. If 052D using the same CODOG system, the tonnage will not change much.

A new type number will be given to the larger ships using COGAG systems.

Maybe the Type 052D is not over 10,000 tons, but i don't think it will be only 6800 tons in full displacement.

Unless China develop more powerful gas turbine engine, otherwise larger tonnage means low speed of the ship.

According to the big shrimps, the propulsion technology does enjoy a groundbreaking improvement in the recent years, otherwise they won't start the mass production for the Type 052C series.

The new Type 052C++ units do have the more powerful propulsion than the first two ships of the family.

The very beginning of 052 and it's CODOG is the results of introduction of 2 GE LM2500 from the US. But after 1989 the door was closed. So the next few ships used Ukranian GT25000 as gas turbine, that's why these types were only built at very few numbers.

It was only until recently, after the domestication of GT25000 or QC280 gas turbine 'broke through', we have the #3,#4,#5,#6,#7... Type 052C(/D).

The future bigger ships will has to use 4 gas turbines COGAG instead of 2+2 CODOG, which might be 9000 ton (QC185*4) or 12000 ton (QC280*4). But that will be a new type or model other than 052.

Yep, although our propulsion is now the second after USA, but we still have a long way to go.

Lets wait for another 5-10 years to see how far we can go. :coffee:

China still Imports from the Ukraine. :coffee:

That's a old time story. India loves to cling on to history... China is the largest military importer in 2000 but now its 2012 Indian will still say the same thing.. Please go update yrself. Dont go quote 10 yrs ago news and make it relevant now.

China produced its own propulsion system just like how we are producing WS-10 aircraft engine which is same class as American FW100.
