Two Tripura rivers to be linked with Bangladesh's Meghna

.
When one has never lived through a traumatic and devastating war like 1971 it is easy to make a comment like this. Post 1971 Bangladesh was a natural mess with all industries and infrastructure destroyed. Even small bridges.

There were theft of major factories too - but let's not get into that.

We had to start from square one. It was much much worse than Vietnam. It took Bangladesh almost ten or more years to get back on its feet industrially. Add to that the Sheikh's stupidity of nationalizing important industry (including jute).

People were dying of hunger on the streets while he was celebrating with his family. These are all well documented.

1. No, it was not worse than Vietnam, nowhere even close. The Vietnamese were in the receiving end of linebackers and agent oranges, a war that went on for 20 years. In no way, I'm trying to demean the Bangladeshi freedom struggle, but, please try not to belittle the Vietnamese for your purposes.

2. I asked the person whom I quoted to draw a realistic picture, not a utopian one. So I believe we agree there ?

.
Why Indians always come up with stupid idea which can never get a consent from Bangladesh. Our policy, dont touch any river and alter its course.

These bridges and waterways will be used Indian army when they invade CHT. :big_boss:

I don't think you have heard first hand accounts - I have. It was a short but extremely bloody guerrilla war of attrition for eight months before the Indian Army even came on the scene.

But I digress....no sense in arguing.

Dude, you are not using the current Exchange rate to calculate the figures from your 2nd source.

The figure that you are looking for is 78903 INR at current prices, This translates to just under 1200 US dollars.
Now BD is slightly over 1300 US dollars and it was much behind West Bengal even as recently as 2010.

Check the 2nd link, the USD figures are already given there, you just cannot pick one data calculated at one exchange rate and apply a different rate on it, that's not the way economics work, you have to make the entire calculation on the new rate then..there is a reason why economists take a 'constant' date.

And please, it's been a year now, you are yet to produce anything credible to support those imaginary BD economic data.

.
Lol - apart from the 1-2% of Chakmas, rest of BD is homogenous.

Both West Bengal and NE states are welcome to join a future enlarged BD.

And do not overplay the impact of sea level rising. BD will lose 17% of it's land mass by 2100
if nothing is done. Of course, BD will spend whatever money is required to preserve it's precious land. BD is in the process if adding 10,000 square kilometres and so it will just
get bigger, not smaller.:D
Why would China allow it?NE states are already a part of it's cultural sphere with China and it's culture being looked up on as an example worth emulating.
Bangladeshis and their delusions. You guys are truly cousins to Indians!

that's all ?
Okay, but this is not convincing at all. Yes, you are correct on your observation that when Pakistan was united it's major exports were from East Pakistan only. But, when separation happened, even that jute export was not enough for the Bangladeshi people, as a result of which many Bangladeshis would illegally come to India searching for jobs. How would that cater for others from WB or NE?

Jute had lost it's value by the mid-1960s as synthetics had become widespread by then in the making of bags etc. The opportunity of window was in the 1950s and early 1960s and not later.

Also you are not taking into account the massive economic costs of the 1971 war- literally nearly every piece of infrastructure in BD had been destroyed and also the Pakistani establishment tried to kill off as many of the highly-educated people as they could in BD.

Saying that a united Bengal + NE would have been as rich as Malaysia is now is no big deal - it just looks good as India has been a economic failure for most of it's independence due to socialist economic policies.

Sorry, but Bangladesh is not a bright example of economic success, besides, you are completely ignoring the 'religion factor' that lead to the partition of united Bengal in the first place.

BD GDP/capita is already up there with India now - India uses GDP base year 2011-12 whereas BD still uses 2004-05. When BD uses 2011-2012 base year to calculate GDP, then the difference in GDP/capita between BD and India would be all but eliminated.

And all this by having 24 less years of independence and a 9 month civil war that literally destroyed the whole economy.:azn:

First let your imaginary data get confirmed by credible sources, then we can discuss about it. World bank's updated data still shows the reality.

And war is excuse, we fought half a dozen of it.

Report for Selected Countries and Subjects

IMF says 1284 dollars for 2015.

BD government maintains over 1300 dollars for 2015.

No, never a total civil war that ravaged all of India and destroyed everything.

That same report predicts $1808 for India. It will be more with updated base year. :)

India is already using the 2011-2012 base year, whereas BD is still using 2004-2005.
When BD starts using 2011-2012 base year, then expect a 15-20 per cent jump in GDP, which
will then mean that BD and India have almost exactly the same GDP/capita.

How? That 1300 per capita is after the revision of base year. Bangladesh is not growing faster than India! The gap will still remain the same, in fact the gap is expected to grow in coming decade. You just cannot bridge such a large gap without growing at a significantly higher rate than us for some years. :)

Just compare the growth rates of the two countries for last one decade. :)
