Two Tripura rivers to be linked with Bangladesh's Meghna

Have it your way.
Keep having very little say in the running of India and remain poorer
than be being part of BD.

BD currently has a GDP/capita in excess of 1300 US dollars and West Bengal is slightly below 1200 US dollars. Remember that only 5 years ago, West Bengal was comfortably ahead of BD - by as much as 50%.

Don't bother about our say in the running of our country, we have a functional democracy, unlike Bangladesh. And we are not particularly jealous about the 2nd poorest economy of South Asia.

Btw, though it doesn't really matter, but your figures are terribly off the mark. :)

West Bengal's GDP per capita 2014: $ 1532

Bangladesh's GDP per capita 2014: $ 1096

Just to remind you, I am skeptical about Bangladeshi news sources, it has to be credible. :)

Dude, you are not using the current Exchange rate to calculate the figures from your 2nd source.

Also the first source is not using the 2015 figure which is over 1300 US dollars for BD.

Like it or not, West Bengal has been failed economically by India. The mind wonders how rich a united Bengal
+ NE states would now be if they had been one country since 1947.

There must be no fun for West Bengalis being part of a poor, religiously crazed country like India since 1947.

I have heard your argument about that imaginary 2015 figures several times, let it get accepted and updated in the World Bank data, then we will consider it. :)

And West Bengal still is a far more industrialized state than Bangladesh, whose only credible industry is garments making, 74% of your exports come from that only, rest comes from export of raw materials, agri productucts and beef.

Btw, we are a part of India since the known history of this part of the world, and our 'poor, religiously crazed' country is much richer, technologically advanced, and secular & tolerant than Bangladesh. :)

Bro - you have got it wrong.:)

The figure that you are looking for is 78903 INR at current prices, This translates to just under 1200 US dollars.
Now BD is slightly over 1300 US dollars and it was much behind West Bengal even as recently as 2010.

Also our friend @Rain Man does not understand the amount of industry there is in BD. He seems to think that just because BD does not export much of other products, apart from garments, then other large-scale industries do not exist. The pharmaceutical industry is 1.5 billion US dollars in revenue and produces 97% of BD's own needs. Other industries like electronics, IT and shipbuilding are also growing rapidly- while they may not be as large a success as garments in export markets just yet, nevertheless they are supplying more and more of BD's own internal needs.

You are right but the main thing is Bangladesh has a higher per capita income than West Bengal, and they call us poor!!!! Height of stupidity!!!!

You are not very wrong actually.

Jute would have been a huge revenue earner in the 1950s and early 1960s which would have assisted in building the infrastructure necessary for rapid industrialisation.

Prove me wrong. Listening with an open mind.

Jute exports from BD accounted for around 70% of the foreign currency earned by the former Pakistan.

This money would have been sufficient to build, rather than spend on weapons as Pakistan did, infrastructure like roads, power stations, dams, ports etc. This infrastructure would have helped facilitate the creation of many types of manufacturing industries.

I am not going to write long essay on this but a united Bengal + NE states would have now been way, way richer than India as it would not have followed a socialist economic model - a country around as wealthy as Malaysia is realistic.

.
Kid - India is a legal entity whereas BD is a real nation.

BD is here to stay but India will cease to exist in the future.

Lol!.... India as a civilization existed before your religion did. India consists of Indians, why dont you come to Kolkata and say this, I am sure 1000s of people will be very very happy. :D

India can collapse and break up, the question though is when. Yugoslavia and the USSR both broke up but, a lot of it had to do with an absolutely terrible economy and a terrible political system at the end. So far India hasn't under gone anything as bad as Yugoslavia and the USSR did but, the real question is when? This century, the next? Who knows?
All powerful countries do eventually fall and decline overtime, India is no different. Though I don't expect a Balkanization of India anytime soon, it does have a high risk of such an event to happen. Can it be avoided? Sure, but for how long?

that's all ?
Okay, but this is not convincing at all. Yes, you are correct on your observation that when Pakistan was united it's major exports were from East Pakistan only. But, when separation happened, even that jute export was not enough for the Bangladeshi people, as a result of which many Bangladeshis would illegally come to India searching for jobs. How would that cater for others from WB or NE?

When one has never lived through a traumatic and devastating war like 1971 it is easy to make a comment like this. Post 1971 Bangladesh was a natural mess with all industries and infrastructure destroyed. Even small bridges.

There were theft of major factories too - but let's not get into that.

We had to start from square one. It was much much worse than Vietnam. It took Bangladesh almost ten or more years to get back on its feet industrially. Add to that the Sheikh's stupidity of nationalizing important industry (including jute).

People were dying of hunger on the streets while he was celebrating with his family. These are all well documented.

The figures I posted here are the authenticated figures accepted by the world, not some fantasies that your friend is posting. West Bengal's GDP per capita is much higher than Bangladesh's. Apart from that, you might consider BD's economic figures are better than Japan's if it makes you feel good.
