Two avalanches hit Gurez sector in J&K, 10 soldiers killed, 'several' missing: Army

There should be some mechanism to address avalanches by pre-empting them. One such mechanism is what Switzerland and Italy do. Both these countries use dynamites and other explosives for controlled avalanches, by cordoning off the mountains.

Once all the excess snow and ice falls down, they give the go ahead.

Need something like this as we are losing too many soldiers to non-combat situations.

Five soldiers, who were rescued after a snow sheath caved in on them in Kupwara’s Macchil sector, died of their wounds on Monday.

A Srinagar-based Army spokesman said they were shifted from Kupwara to an Army hospital in Srinagar “despite persistent poor weather conditions” for specialist medical care, but this did not help save their lives.

It was on January 28 that the five were trapped under snow for several hours after the pathway leading to their picket caved in.

It took one hour for the rescue team to pull them out of the snow sheath.

Since then they were being treated locally as they could not be airlifted by copters due to the inclement weather. Meanwhile, the bodies of 14 soldiers killed in twin avalanches in Bandipora’s Gurez sector, were flown in here. “The bodies will be taken to their native places on Tuesday for last rites,” said the spokesman.

The soldiers died between January 25 and 26 in Bandipora’s Gurez valley. The bodies remained stuck in the valley due to fresh snowfall.

A total of 26 people, including 20 soldiers, have died in avalanches in the Kashmir Valley since January 25.

The Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) is working on four projects to develop new technologies for more accurate prediction of avalanches, the government said on Friday. Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre told the Lok Sabha that DRDO has 56 high altitude observatories, 55 weather automatic stations and five avalanche mitigation centres in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand that give specific forecast related to mountain weather.

“Presently, the DRDO is working on four projects to develop new technologies for more accurate prediction of avalanches,” he said in a written response. Last month, 15 soldiers lost their lives due to avalanche. Replying to another question, Bhamre said the jawans deployed at places such as Siachen Glacier are provided with the best-quality winter clothing. This comprises 22 items of clothing in all, including trousers, jackets, gloves and sun glasses.

“The winter clothing provided to the jawans is designed to withstand extreme temperatures that even go below minus 50 degrees Celsius,” Bhamre said, adding that no shortcomings have been reported in the clothing provided and its upgradation is a continuous process. He said the soldiers deployed in Siachen are being provided pre-fabricated insulated shelters. At places where construction of integrated shelters is not possible, soldiers are provided with insulated tents to withstand extreme low temperatures.

Responding to another question, he said screening of personnel for any stress markers, psychological counselling by trained military psychological counsellors is undertaken regularly. “In Navy, advisories on mental health are issued from time to time and stress relieving activities like yoga, art of living are conducted periodically. “There is also Manasik Seva Helpline working at the Air Force Central Medical Establishment and all personnel found to be having any psychiatric deviation are referred to psychiatrists in nearest service hospitals,” Bhamre said.

The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained closed for traffic for the second consecutive day today in the wake of landslides at some places, even as the weather remained dry in Kashmir with the night temperature settling close to the freezing point at most places. The Srinagar-Jammu highway is closed for traffic today due to muck brought in by landslides accumulated on road at some places, an official of the Traffic Control Room said.

He said landslides have occurred near Ramban and Battery Cheshma which have forced the closure of the highway, the only all-weather road link connecting Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country. The official said many vehicles are stranded along the nearly 300-km long highway and would only be allowed to proceed further once the debris is cleared. The men and machinery of are on the job and once the debris is cleared off, the stranded vehicles will be allowed to proceed further subject to weather conditions, the official said.

The weather in Kashmir has remained dry during the last 48 hours but the Meteorological Department has forecast scattered to fairly widespread rains or snowfall in the state over the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, Srinagar, the summer capital of the state -recorded a low of 1 degree Celsius, a remarkable improvement after the 40-day harshest winter period known as Chillai-Kalan ended on January 31.

Leh town in Ladakh region registered a low of minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, up from minus 8.3 degrees Celsius the previous night, making it the coldest recorded place in the state, an official of the MET Office said. He said the famous hill resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir, which serves as a base camp for annual Amarnath yatra, registered minimum temperature of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius — same as previous night.

The official said the famous ski resort of Gulmarg, the star attraction for tourists visiting the Valley during winter, was the coldest recorded place in the Valley with the minimum of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius compared to the previous night’s minus 5.4 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature at Qazigund, Kupwara and Kokernag towns hovered near the freezing point at 0.2, 1.1 and minus 0.1 degree Celsius respectively, the official said.

Avalanches in Jammu and Kashmir

DRDO–developed ‘Wearable Physiological Monitoring System (WPMS)’ is capable of wireless transmission of vital physiological parameters of soldiers for triaging applications in field operations where clear line of sight is possible. This system was developed as a technology demonstration that can work with range of 60m clear line of sight that is commonalty employed in open areas and usual combat scenarios. This system will be inducted after field trials with the Indian Army.

One new customized system for avalanche-specific use is in the development stage which can detect the location of soldiers trapped by avalanche snow and also health status of soldier to prioritize the search operations effectively.

This information was given by Minister of State for Defence Dr. Subhash Bhamre in a written reply to Shri S.R. Vijaya kumar and others in Lok Sabha today.

At least five soldiers were trapped when a series of avalanches hit Batalik sector in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir burying an Army post. The unexpected snowfall in April caused multiple avalanches in the region. Two of the soldiers buried in the Army post have been rescued, while the search for the rest three is still on. A Northern Command tweet said, “Unprecedented snowfall triggers multiple avalanches; a Post in Batalik Sector buried, 2 soldiers out of 5 rescued.”

Srinagar received 83.9 mm and snowfall since yesterday, the MeT department officials had reported. An advisory was issued by the Chandigarh-based Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) earlier on Thursday for parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

“High-danger avalanche warning is in place for slopes and areas of Kargil in Jammu and Kashmir,” PTI quoted the SASE. “A medium-danger avalanche warning is in place in slopes and areas of Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir,” it said.

As per PTI reports, in earlier incidences of avalanches in Sonamarg area of Ganderbal, Gurez in Bandipora and Machhil in Kupwara districts in January this year, at least 20 Army personnel including a major and a Junior Commissioned Officer lost their lives.

Special rescue team engaged in search operations; Valley cut off as National Highways remain closed
Five soldiers swept away in heavy snowfall near the frontier posts in Kupwara and Bandipora remained untraced after more than 24 hours on Tuesday, while an Army porter’s body was recovered.

“Two soldiers slipped down the slope in the Naugam sector of Kupwara. Three soldiers went missing from a forward post in the Kanzalwan sub-sector of Gurez in Bandipora,” a Srinagar-based Army spokesman, Colonel Rajesh Kalia, told The Hindu.

An Army official said an 11-member patrol team of 36 Rashtriya Rifles was on an inter-post movement around 8.30 p.m. on Monday when three jawans slipped into a ravine.

The posts are close to the Line of Control in the Bakhtor area, more than 200 km from here, of Gurez.

“A specialist team from the High Altitude Warfare School reached the site and started rescue operations, which are still on,” the official said.

Two soldiers of a patrol team of an officer and 10 troopers of 20 Dogra fell into a ravine at Naugam around 5 p.m. on Monday.

The specialist team was unable to reach the site on Tuesday because of heavy snowfall, officials said. Preliminary reports suggest heavy snowfall, which started on Monday, caused these accidents. Over four feet of snow has accumulated in these areas. Ghulam Qadir Khan, an Army porter from Kilshey village of Tulail, fell to death during snowfall. The body has been recovered.

Deputy Commissioner, Bandipora, Sajjad Hussain on Tuesday asked people in the Gurez and Tulail areas not to venture out in avalanche-prone areas till the weather improved.

Snow in the plains

The plains of Kashmir Valley also witnessed the season’s first snow spell in the past 24 hours, badly affecting road connectivity.

The national highways connecting Srinagar to Jammu, Leh and Poonch, besides the Mughal-Sinthan Top, Jammu-Doda and Arnas-Mahore highways are closed.

“Men with machinery are busy clearing snow for vehicular movement,” said Colonel Awadhesh Singh, Director, Works, Project Beacon, Border Roads Organisation.

Sonum Lotus, Director, Meteorological Department, said Kashmir would witness “a gradual improvement in the weather conditions from Wednesday
