As many as 56 persons, who had applied for the chopper service from Lahaul to Kullu, were airlifted today. After snowfall on December 10, the 13,050 feet high Rohtang Pass, the gateway to Lahaul-Spiti, was closed to vehicular traffic, which cut off the tribal areas from rest of the world for five months.

The state government has provided its helicopter service to patients, requiring treatment in a bigger hospital in Kullu or some other districts, and those who have some urgencyto move out of the district.

According to the information provided by liaison officer Ashok Kumar at Kullu, 46 people and six children were airlifted from the Bhuntar airport, Kullu, to Lahaul, while 56 from Lahaul were ferried to Kullu, in which two were patients. A total of six sorties were made to and from the Tandi Diet helipad in Lahaul.

Over 250 persons had applied for availing the chopper service from Kullu and these people were waiting for their turn to be airlifted. Talking to The Tribune, Prem Lal, native of Lahaul, said the service had brought cheer to the tribals, because in the winter, this was the only option to move in or out of the district during an emergency.

He said, “After the closure of the Rohtang Pass, weare cut off with the rest of the world for five or six months every year during the winter and air service is the only transportation facility viable, which is provided by the state government”.

The mighty Rohtang Pass receives heavy snowfall during this time of the year and there is no transportation facility on the Manali-Leh highway. The road is opened by the BRO in April or May for regular traffic movement.
