Turkish Unmanned Vehicle Programs

It looks like very capable machine :coffee:

can it (Karayel) stand still/stationary in the air during flight? o_O

Perfect Landing , look at the touch point and distance for full stop, just imagine this baby landing on our LHD

It looks like it shakes a little bit because of engine but it should be acceptable if tests are successful...

Turkish Drone Passes Flight Test with Payload

A locally-developed Turkish drone passed a critical flight test, flying with an electro-optical camera and a total payload of 51 kilograms, officials from the drone's manufacturer said.

Officials with privately-owned firm Vestek Savunma said the Karayel drone is ready to enter the Turkish military's inventory.

Vestel has been developing the tactical done since 2005, investing $30 million in the program.

The Karayel is an unmanned air vehicle system designed for aerial observation. The Karayel began test flights in 2009. Remote sensing systems on board are able to detect a target and mark for laser-guided munitions. All phases of the flight, take-off, landing and flight profile are performed autonomously. Its payload bay is configurable for military and civilian applications.

Under a 2011 contract Vestel will procure six aircraft to the Turkish military together with four sets of payload and perform the entire integration work.

Vestel officials said the drone performs better than its original configuration required. The Karayel was designed to perform at a maximum 18,000 feet, a flight duration of 10 hours and carry up to 35 kilograms of payload. After deliveries, it will perform at 22,500 feet and flight duration of 20 hours with a 70 kilogram payload.

"The program aims to minimize Turkey's dependence on foreign drone systems," Vestel Savunma's general director, Aziz Sipahi, told reporters. "The aircraft features maximum local content."

The Karayel's payload includes day and night vision electro-optical cameras, laser distance measurement system and laser guidance and tracking systems. Its payload is designed to also carry ammunitions.

How come they used a foreign targeting system (Wescam mx-15) and not an Aselsan targeting system? I thought the whole point of local production was so there wouldn't be any need to import. Are the Aselsan tergeting systems too heavy or something?

I am guessing that the FLIR systems of ASELSAN are also foreign based regarding hardware, an example being IR cameras.

All FLIRs Aselsan markets are completely designed by Turkish engineers. During assembly phrase, Some subcomponents were ordered abroad such as lenses raw materials, IR detectors and image intensifier. Thin film covering technology is available for lenses and Aselsan succesfully produced Germanium raw materials to produce domestic lenses. The institute to be opened in Sivas, is going to produce strategic lenses for military and civilian gears. Additions, Aselsan succesfully developed one of the most critical component, Quantum wave IR detector which put Aselsan into Top-5-6 in World. Image intensifier project must be in trial phase...

Great, but what about this news then?

I may be wrong but As far as I remember, It is the SWIR detector based uncooled CMOS camera. SWIR detectors are mostly used on spy satellite's electro-optic payloads. What Aselsan produces is QWIP based cooled thermal cameras which is used on aircrafts, tanks and many other strategic units. Aselsan is working on SWIR and NIR IR detectors as well and It must be early prototype of low resolution SWIR detector application on a miniature camera(I suppose) or a seperate funded project which aims to produce a mini spy camera.

GaSb-InAs Infrared Photodetector Development (KÖFDE)

Objective : To develop GaSb/InAs based detectors in the Midwave InfraRed (MWIR) region by using the Super Lattice technology and to establish the necessary technological infrastructure.

Scope : One pixel of a GaSb/InAs based detector working in the MWIR region.

Project Model : R&D

Prime/Sub Contractor : ASELSAN/ODTÜ/BİLKENT (Anadolu University)

Contract Date : 16.09.2012

Status : Guaranty Period

SWIR Detector Development (KANGAL)

Objective : To acquire the experience and the technology necessary to develop NIR/SWIR detector.

Scope : InGaAs based detectors that are used in NIR/SWIR imaging systems.

Project Model : R&D

Prime/Sub Contractor : ASELSAN / ODTÜ / Cumhuriyet Üniversitesi

Contract Date : 29.11.2012

Status :
Design Phase

Those mentioned detectors are being manufactured by a few countries in World. Russia doesn't even have such advanced E/O technologies..

Thx Nutuk

Graphics openly introduce three of UAV's meet the SSM/TSK requirements but Israeli Heron is one step ahead of our ANKA-B (same category UAV's) especially in endurance.

Israeli engineers reach more duration with less powerfull engines than ours. I think It is about design parameters of fuselage and wings and Israel is rare country which is able to reach 35+ hours of duration with their MALE UAV's, While ANKA stays 24 hours. Turkish designs are more or less comparable with USA Predator-A/B class. They have similar endurance performance. ANKA overtakes MQ-1A/B in flight ceiling figures.
