ANKARA — Mehmetcik, a new assault rifle that will be used by the Turkish military, has passed rounds of tests, and a serial production contract is in the offing, procurement officials have said.

Mehmetcik will replace 500,000 aging G3 rifles used in the Turkish military. It will be used by both regular infantry and Special Forces.

State-run ammunition specialist MKE has started a pilot production of a batch of 200 Mehmetcik rifles, one procurement official said.

Under a 2009 contract with the country’s procurement agency, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries, MKE started to develop a light, efficient and modular rifle.

The new rifle is a modified version of the German Heckler & Koch HK 416. It is an 8-pound, 5.56mm weapon with mounting rails for scopes and a hand grip forward of the magazine. It uses 30-round magazines.

I'm thinking of if defencenews mixed Mehmetçik 1 and MPT...

Is MPT "a modified version of the German Heckler & Koch HK 416. It is an 8-pound, 5.56mm weapon with mounting rails for scopes and a hand grip forward of the magazine. It uses 30-round magazines." ???

MPT is 7.62 right ?

And MPT will replace 500.000 G3s not Mehmetçik 1

Im confused aswell. By looking at the MPT I cant tell whether or not it is an indigenous design because it does look like an hk 417 (7.62x51). Now according to this article the Mehmetcik 1 is 5.56 and is basically a copy of the hk 416 with an added grip infront of the magazine.

It is the mistakes of journalists.

MKEK made lots of amateurish mistakes in MPT project so Respectability of MKE over Turkish public, especially the people who have some idea about industrial process, suddenly decreased below zero. After 1 years of signiture ceremony of 5,56mm Meh.-1, Idiots appeared on TV screens with an original HK-416 rifle with stamped German federal licence marking and introduced German rifle as Mehmetcik-1. Most of us believed them but Reality was completely different. MKEK wanted to catch TSKGV institutes' impressive domestic development effort winds with receiving a German rifle and make some minor changes on and reveal to media as domestic. After this time, All actions of MKEK become a joke issues over us, especially following serious and amateurish mistakes on EW munitions, Fuse programs. In parallel with those psicological processes, German government issued objection to MKE over M-1's licence rights. With this way, The project suddenly cancelled.

Second project is announced as MPT with 7,62 mm. This time, To prevent a likely fiasco, SSM acted quite clever and putted Kale, a perfect design center on rifles and aerospace, as sub-contactor. MPT story started like that and Following actions were taken step by step;

MKEK firstly developed 3 different initial MPT prototypes and produced a few for trials. With the referances received from Army officials, They developed a new prototype called MPT-A thanks to the best parts of previous 3 prototypes and manufactured hundreds for trials. During trials, Army officials met some problems that They can never accept and send back them to MKEK again. This time, KALE engineers put their noses as if main contactor, into MPT program and re-designed problematic 9 different parts and developed MPT-B. What you are talking as success story, is created like that...

Dude, we have 7.62x54Rs, we have 7.62x51 NATOs, we have 7.62x39 AK rounds, we have 5.56x45 NATOs, we have .338 Lapua for snipers. We have so many types of rounds, we can't afford to introduce any new calibers.
