Right.
Stopping the nuclear core reaction by pulling out the rods, in almost 5 seconds.
Next phase is cooling down the reactor under 100 degree C ,
lasts 3-4 days (mentioned as "cold shutdown status")
You actually DROP the rods to reduce the rate of fission, not raise them. They're neutron moderators. Fuel rods are already in there. Power output will start falling within minutes but will never be zero until the fuel runs out or the reactor is dismantled. You can still run the turbines for an hour or two after that on the remaining heat, driving the sub at full speed, then gradually reducing unless you switch to battery. Batteries can last a few days at near full speed or up to a couple weeks at "economical speed" (until the sub goes back to its home port for servicing).

I cannot agree with you...

Nuclear subs are good at blue and deep water... but, its a sitting duck in a Mediterranean sea for the reasons below

1) When the water used to cool down nuclear engine, steam... Nuclear submarine release it to water which release huge thermal sign behind it...
2) Because of nuclear energyand steam, there is huge vibration and sound in Nuclear submarine, which the sound get vibrated when it swims in shallow water..
3) You can turn off the diesel engine and wait for your hunt to arrive, and working with batteries.. especially with AIP system, they increased it from 1 week to 3 weeks... instead, you cannot stop nuclear engine, basically it will always make sound...

I believe, Turkey is on right track... you shouldnt invest all you got to nuclear energy... With Russian and Japanese help, you will get there after 2023-2025...

Turkey should heavily invest in AIP systems and you have a new great product.. Why Turkey just dont invest billions in it and sell it to Malasia and Indonesia... ? ASEAN countries are dieing to get Submarines... not from Chine and Russia(allies) and not from US and EUrope, Korea or Japan(they all depend on USA and you never know if the Falkland war happens again..)... who left? Turkey has huge opportunity to fill that gap...
You would be laughing if I told you why most of submarines are easily picked by hydrophones, instead of thinking so complicated about heated water or moving pistons go for simple source of vibration on the systems needed essentially for humans in the submarine.
In some exercises those cutting edge submarines were being detected within a minute of all silent mode just because of a fan which is recently replaced with a loose screw (not joking).
So far I know steam turbine used in there has a difference than the conventional one and main problem about pumbs have been solved years ago, if it wasnt so submarines wouldnt push toward zero cavitation propellers among loosing the efficiency.
Magnetic anomaly or tracking AUVs is the new trend of detecting submarines.

Just for info nuclear submarine works similar to steam submarines there is many misconceptions here

The nuclear reactor is used to heat water to turn it into steam

The steam is used to turn the propeller

The rector DOES NOT use sea water to cool its got its own reactor coolant through a recycle

A SSN does not have a heat trial for goodness sake

Let's not get carried away nuclear submarine is the ace up the sleeve of any navy true hunter killer

But they are very expensive and need nuclear refueling so infrastructure which is why many prefer SSK

Meteksan has completed development of;

  • Single crystal piezoelectric ceramics, used in sonars.
pGW6A0.jpg
  • Fiber optic acoustic sensors, resistant against EMP, EMI and doesn't require electrical power.

  • Acoustic Vector Sensors, these single form factor sensors are capable of detecting, localising, identifying and tracking sound sources in 3D space.

Azerbaijani news.. they talk about Reis class submarines..

On the other hand, Germany approved to sell additional submarines to Israel.. Turkey should volume up its production or push local defence industry..

Not Reis but Milden, I think!

We really don't have luxury of losing time between Reis and Milden projects this time. Our navy shrinking in numbers and will continue to shrink for sometime even though our capacity is increasing. Production in gölcük should continue without gap in these projects.

Those Israëli Dolphin class(Extended, updated type-212) subs are with second Strike capabilities, they are bigger and better then the future T-214s(type 214) of our Navy, thats why the Milden project is very important.
