The
Turkish Naval Forces (
Turkish:
Türk Deniz Kuvvetleri), or
Turkish Navy (
Turkish:
Türk Donanması) is the
naval warfare service branch of the
Turkish Armed Forces.
The navy can trace its lineage back to the
first Turkish fleets to sail the Aegean in the late 11th century, the fleets of the
Anatolian beyliks in the 14th century, and, more immediately, to the
Ottoman Navy. However, the modern naval traditions and customs of the Turkish Navy can be traced back to 10 July 1920, when it was established as the
Directorate of Naval Affairs during the
Turkish War of Independence led by
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Since July 1949, the service has been officially known as the
Turkish Naval Forces.
As of 2014, the Turkish Navy had a reported active personnel strength of 48,600; this figure included an Amphibious Marines Brigade as well as several Special Forces and
Commando detachments. The navy has approximately 215 ships in commission and 51 maritime aircraft.

Naval Infantry and Special Forces:
The Turkish Navy maintains several Marines and Special Operations units. These include the Amphibious Marines Brigade (Amfibi Deniz Piyade Tugayı), several
commando detachments and two special operations forces:
- Amphibious Marines Brigade - (Amfibi Deniz Piyade Tugayı) consisting of 6,000 men based in Foça near İzmir, four amphibious battalions, an MBT battalion, an artillery battalion, a support battalion and other company-sized units.
- Su Altı Taarruz - (S.A.T.) (Underwater Attack). The missions of the Su Altı Taarruz (SAT) include the acquisition of military intelligence, amphibious assault, counter-terrorism and VIP protection.
- Su Altı Savunma - (S.A.S.) (Underwater Defense).

Turkish Naval Forces' Missions
It is of fundamental importance for the Naval Forces to defend the homeland against probable maritime threats and consider country’s related interests.
Turkish Fleet Command's Missions
Mission of the Fleet Command is to maintain the readiness level of its units and provide effective use of the force.
Northern Sea Area Command's Missions
Mission of the Northern Sea Area Command is to maintain the readiness level of it’s units and provide logistics support to the ships within its responsibility area.
Southern Sea Area Command's Missions
Mission of the Southern Sea Area Command is to maintain the readiness level of it’s units and provide logistics support to the ships within its responsibility area.
Naval Training and Education Command's Missions
The mission of the Naval Training and Education Command is to carry out the training and education activities in accordance with the requirements of Naval Forces Command, to train and educate personnel in order to capable to use the current and projected waeapons, systems and devices to adopt devoloping and changing technology, who are loyal to ATATÜRK’s principles and reforms , educated, skilfull and have high level of maritime consciousness.
