Greek, Turkish navies play cat-and-mouse on Aegean

Greek and Turkish navies experienced tension on the Aegean Sea on Nov. 12, after a Greek coastguard boat harassed Turkish fishers inside Turkish territorial waters.

The naval forces of Turkey and Greece played cat-and-mouse on the Aegean Sea that lasted for about 20 minutes in the afternoon of Nov. 12, after a Greek coastguard boat harassed Turkish fishers inside of Turkish waters.

A Greek coastguard boat harassed Turkish fishers for around two hours off of the coast of the western province of Muğla’s Bodrum. The Greek boat came inside the area of the two islands just before the Turgutreis neighborhood of the Bodrum district.

Two Turkish warships intervened, resulting in cat-and-mouse style maritime activities which lasted for around 20 minutes. At one point, ships were within 30 meters of each other, which forced the Greek boat to retreat from Turkish territorial waters to the nearby Greek island of Kalymnos.

Meanwhile, the Turkish General Staff announced that two Greek fighter aircrafts violated Turkish airspace around the southwest of İzmir for 55 seconds on Nov. 12.

Cat-and-mouse maritime activities and dogfights between Turkish and Greek aircrafts over the Aegean Sea have significantly decreased due to the economic crisis Athens is struggling with.

TCG Saldıray Decommissioned

Today, Turkish Navy announced the retirement of Atılay class (209 Type 1200) submarine TCG Saldıray.

TCG Saldıray was the second of her class and was built in Kiel Germany. She was launched in 1974 and commissioned in Turkish Navy in 1977. There were news about an explosion in her, while she was in Gölcük Naval base. But these stories were never ever commented by Turkish Navy. Earlier this year she took part in Beyaz Fırtına 2014 naval exercise and fired a torpedo to a target ship.

On 14 November 2014, her final day in commission, she made a farewell cruise with her active and former crew.

I wasn't expected retirement of ay class until start of AIP deliveries. Interesting that it was second oldest sub in TN, probably fire news is true.

U.S. Denies Turkey Leftover Warships

The U.S. Congress has approved the handover of some leftover naval vessels to allies, pointedly excluding Turkey from the list of recipients.

In late December, the U.S. finally approved the long-delayed handover of six naval frigates to Mexico and Taiwan. But the bill passed Congress only after Turkey (along with Pakistan and Thailand) were eliminated as potential recipients, for a variety of political reasons.

In the 2012 version of the "Naval Transfer Act," Turkey was to receive two Oliver Hazard Perry class guided missile frigates, the USS Halyburton and the USS Thach, which are being decommissioned by the U.S. Navy.

But the inclusion of Turkey proved controversial, as members of Congress pointed out Turkey's increasingly hostile stance toward Israel and its threats against natural gas exploration by American companies near Cyprus. "I believe we should hold off on sending powerful warships to Turkey and encourage the government in Ankara to take a less belligerent approach to their neighbors," said Representative Eliot Engel during that debate.

That bill was ultimately defeated, and an alliance of Greek, Jewish, and Armenian lobbying groups took credit. But the defeat was only a symbolic one, says Can Devrim Yaylali, a Turkish naval blogger, who notes that the frigates in question were significantly more poorly equipped than the ships Turkey currently operates (including those of the same class) and could only have been cannibalized for spare parts.

"The lack of these frigates will not have any effect on the Turkish Navy at all from a technical point of view," Yaylali tells The Bug Pit. "If the US lawmakers tried to give some kind of a signal to the Turkish government by not adding Turkey to the list of the nations that may get a frigate is beyond my understanding. But if they did; the message was not delivered as the medium is not the correct one."

That's probably a report written after an exercise. Seems like the crew of HMCS Toronto is going to be kicked in the a.ss really badly. From what I read, the ships response to threats are lethally slower than it has to be. Toronto also has a heat problem in the deck. In case a fire occurs or it gets hit, fires will spread immediately. And here comes the irony, the unofficial motto of HMCS Toronto is;
Halfway to Hell! :D
