Didn't know where else to put this, but I'm sure people will hear more about Biontech and Ugur Sahin and his wife Özlem Türeci in the Turkish news in the future. Their company in Germany is currently in the lead for a Covid19 vaccine, company jumped to a valuation of 18bln € today. They have already sold hundreds of millions of the soon to be ready vaccine. At a valuation of 15-20€ per shot.

Ugur Sahin seems to be worth at least 3bln now and it is not known how much his wife holds. He's the son of a factory worker at Ford in Cologne, moved to Germany with his family when he was 4 and well he's now saving lifes and a billionaire while doing so.

Masallah, funny though we only hear about companies, but not who the owners are or their background. I need to do some googling.

Ugur Sahin Becomes A Billionaire On Hopes For Technology Behind COVID-19 Vaccine

  • Stock traders have reacted by bidding up BioNTech’s stock, which has more than tripled since the IPO, conferring a $11.5 billion valuation on the company. The ferocious stock run-up has boosted Şahin’s net worth to $2.1 billion, landing Şahin on Forbes’ list of billionaires for the first time.

A BioNTech filing with the Securities & Exchange Commission shows that in February Şahin owned 18% of BioNTech’s shares. In its IPO, BioNTech sold American Depository Shares as a foreign private issuer. While BioNTech’s post-IPO share lock-up for its officers and early shareholders has expired, Şahin has not made any securities disclosures since February, suggesting he has not sold his BioNTech shares, at least in a material amount. Given the nature of Şahin’s securities filings and BioNTech’s issuer status, he would need to make an SEC filing if he sold more than 2% of his shares.

That distinguishes Şahin from billionaire Stéphane Bancel and other executives of Moderna, the other publicly traded company developing an experimental COVID-19 vaccine using mRNA technology. Stat News reported last week that Bancel and the other top four executives at Moderna have sold $89 million of Moderna stock this year. In May, Moderna also conducted a $1.3 billion stock offering that was announced the same day the company released a snippet of positive data from its COVID-19 vaccine trial. BioNTech has not issued new shares to the public since the pandemic began.

A spokesperson for BioNTech declined to comment about Şahin’s net worth and his BioNTech share holdings.

At age 54, Şahin each morning rides his bicycle to BioNtech’s offices in Mainz, Germany. He has been completely focused on pushing forward a vaccine for COVID-19 as quickly as possible, people who know him say. In April, BioNTech started testing its COVID-19 vaccine candidate, BNT162, in 200 study participants in Germany. With the help of Pfizer, another 360 volunteers will be tested with BioNTech vaccines in the U.S. and the trial may swell to 8,000.

Pfizer has committed to spending about $1 billion to develop the vaccine in 2020, including manufacturing shots before their efficacy is known, and making the vaccine available as early as October to some vulnerable populations. It is far from a sure thing—no mRNA vaccine or treatment has ever been approved by U.S. or European regulators.

Born in Turkey, Şahin was raised in Germany, where his parents worked in a Ford factory. Trained as a doctor, Şahin became a professor and researcher focused on immunotherapy. He often collaborated in his work with his immunologist wife, Özlem Türeci, and together in 2001 they founded Ganymed Pharmaceuticals to develop monoclonal antibodies against cancer. Türeci would lead as CEO and the company was backed by billionaire identical twins Thomas and Andreas Strüngmann. Ganymed was acquired in 2016 by Astellas Pharma in a $1.4 billion deal.

Şahin founded BioNTech in 2008, again backed by the billionaire Strüngmann brothers. Türeci, who was running Ganymed, was for years a scientific adviser to the company and joined BioNTech as chief medical officer after Ganymed was sold.

Şahin built BioNTech to use immune-oncology to go after cancer in multiple fashions, launching more than 20 different development programs over the years. But BioNTech became best known for its work using messenger RNA to develop cancer vaccines, including a personalized one knowns as iNest. The idea was to make drug or vaccine factories out of human bodies and program cells to produce therapeutic proteins.

Along the way, BioNTech partnered with Pfizer on a flu vaccine and got financial backing from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. But despite all the promise, BioNTech has yet to get any of its mRNA products approved for human-use in its first decade of existence, much like high-profile rival, Moderna Therapeutics.

But both Moderna and BioNTech were in a strong position to provide a potential solution to the coronavirus pandemic. Both companies are extraordinarily well-funded and well-connected. An mRNA approach also had the potential of dramatically shortening the development time of a COVID-19 vaccine.

On a weekend in January, Şahin read an article in The Lancet about the virus and predicted to Thomas Strüngmann that a pandemic was coming that would close the schools. “After the weekend he went on Monday to his team and although most of them were in oncology, he switched most of his team to the vaccine,” Strüngmann said in an interview.

By February, Şahin called Kathrin Jansen, the head of vaccine research and development for Pfizer. The two knew each other well because two years earlier BioNTech had partnered with Pfizer to develop an mRNA-based flu vaccine. Şahin told Jansen BioNTech had come up with vaccine candidates for Covid-19 and asked if Pfizer would be interested in working with him. “Uğur, you are asking?” Jansen replied. “Of course we are interested.”

By the middle of March, BioNTech announced “rapid progress” on its product candidate, BNT162, and its collaboration with Pfizer. The U.S. drug giant agreed to fund all the initial development and production costs, up to $1 billion that includes a $185 million upfront payment to BioNTech. Pfizer is also on the hook for another $563 million in payments to BioNTech if things go well. Pfizer is brining its massive manufacturing, regulatory and research capacity to the project. BioNTech’s stock soared, although it has since given up a big chunk of those early gains.

One thing that makes BioNTech’s partnership with Pfizer different than Moderna’s vaccine effort is that it does not rely on any government funding. Moderna is getting up to $483 million from the federal government’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. Another unique aspect is the BioNTech partnership with Pfizer is testing four different vaccines, distinctive mRNA platforms. Researchers will closely monitor participant immunogenicity data, looking for the production of neutralizing antibodies, with an eye toward abandoning any of the four vaccines that do not produce them sufficiently.

Some on Wall Street have felt traders of BioNTech’s stock are getting overly optimistic. On March 20, for example, analysts at JPMorgan Chase suggested investors temper their enthusiasm, noting that BioNTech’s market capitalization had eclipsed many valuations of biotechnology companies with more than $1 billion in revenues.

“Any future ability to monetize a COVID-19 therapy plus the potential goodwill of addressing this pandemic is already reflected in this valuation,” they wrote. “The ability to monetize a COVID-19 asset is clearly a secondary consideration at this point for the company; the overwhelming focus is on addressing a public health emergency.”

That seems to be an accurate assessment. “The speed with which we were able to move from the start of the program to trial initiation speaks to the high level of engagement from everyone involved,” Şahin said in a statement in April.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla has accelerated the timeline for the potential COVID-19 vaccine, pushing Pfizer to try to be in position to apply for early use authorization from the Food & Drug Administration in October and produce 20 million doses by the end of the year. Vaccines normally take years to develop and making a safe and effective one can be extraordinarily difficult. At one point, Bourla was pressed by some at Pfizer to maybe not make the aggressive timeline public, but Bourla felt it was paramount to make Pfizer’s COVID-19 work fully transparent to the public amid a pandemic.

Bourla, who was born and raised in Greece, spoke to Şahin and the two agreed to share raki, an alcoholic drink popular in both their native countries, once a vaccine is successfully developed. “There is only one enemy,” Bourla said in an interview. “The virus and time.”

You're missing the point, we have to enable our people to get thing like these done in Turkey. To get the best education and venture capital possible. We have so many Turks successfull abroad in pharmacy, aerospace (US), software or gaming. I'm proud of them and would be even prouder if they managed to do that in Turkey.

I would also be proud if we could alternative attract people from central asian, Pakistan etc who are looking for better opportunities. What we need is less brain drain, whether they are ethnically Turk or foreign. And of course Germany will log that win, because he lives there, did everything there and has been living there since he was 4.

In total 3700 mothers. Among million of mothers they are giving money to only 3700 mothers. You can be sure that all of them are related with AKP.

Also money for this initiative come from EU.

you should stop craving to become an atheistic, western, assimilated nation without identity just for some coca-cola and more gaystuff on IG... thousands of examples, how the west, at first place the US, made states fail - the moment a coup didn't work - by targeting the currency and economy, so the people start revolting ... but you young Turks are soooo blind... I don't know what to say - you really believe that in the west money is growing on trees..... like former DDR people believed western Germany is eating bananas 24/7 LMFAO - in Detroit, for example, you have a poverty-level and unemployment rate beyond imagination... You got manipulated to a point, where you fucked up the whole country for some trees and because the law against taking drugs near schools and mosques - meanwhile there are a lot of cities in Germany and also in other western countries, where we have smth called "sperrstunde" in fact a curfew... I don't want to imagine what yall would to in turkey for such things... other than burning down the whole country, cause you weren't able to drink some raki in Hardrock cafes... bro, really, don't want to insult anyone... but it's getting ridiculous -
Compares you 'proud' Turks with China -
there, the currency and economy are currently extremely devalued, under pressure, but instead of revealing one's own country on social media, etc. (and there are real reprisals), the Chinese are loyal and prefer to starve instead of making propaganda against turkey on the internet...
But yes, you are right, nobody is allowed to say anything, and we are all sooooooo annoying and ignorant! All AKP extremists and nobody has a sober view of the situation ... Of course, we all don't live in Syria or Libya or anywhere else, but we have a big mouth to form our opinion ...

Yes- I will shut up :) yall are omniscient and suffering slaves of a banana republic and as soon as the AKP has been executed, RTE is hanged, everyone will swim in gold :) the real deal Bruhh!

Easy for you to speak from Germany, meanwhile i have relatives in Turkey who are depending on me to be able to pay their electricity and gas bills, at least lira is so cheap that i am able to help them out.

Dostum bos yapiyorsun, Türkiye'deki insanlarin hali berbat.

Do you have to send money to help out your relatives? No? Better stop talking like everything is fine because it's not.

. .
We all are not automatically ignorant or AKP supporters or religious extremists, just because we occasionally look for reasons for these problems... but yes, we do have to help from time to time relatives - but not as we did in the 90s - Back then, because I was too young - my parents had to pay money for every hospital stay of their siblings, today it is no longer so ...
I also know that -SINAN- wants to tell me that the coup was staged, that's not what I was trying to point out ...
It is important to me that yall start realizing that EVERY nation in this world that has pursued its own goals has a similar experience ... and I know you will only rest, when turkey has become a libya and RTE has been hanged and everyone is flowing again bathing with honey and money falling from the sky ... I don't know how you see it ... but my parents found the 70s worse than today ... maybe you should really avoid 'alternative' media - other than that media in europe, your alternative media is not loyal to the state, but is waiting for the chance you destroy entire cities again, because of a park ... I don't know such behavior in Europe .. apparently, the people here are more nationalistic ...
The people here are beaten blind, gased into hospitals by the police because whole FORESTS are to be destroyed, for coal, etc. and apart from a little barking, you hear nothing here - because the media don't report ...
In Turkey, PKK flags are suddenly hoisted on MKA statues and billions of dollars are incurred, cities destroyed, because BBC, DW, and YOL-TV are asking you to do so ... in Germany, 60% of all eligible voters voted, 60% of them the AKP - that's nothing... I can't even vote ... but each of us is immediately extremist, annoying, stupid, and childish ... a traitor ... because he tries to find reasons for everything? You make it easy for yourself...
I am really saddened by your behavior ... I swear to you .... it is really bad-hearted to assume 'gurbetcis' only such things ...
But maybe. We are simply more critical than you - maybe we see things differently and see through things faster through social and school education ... are more alert because we have been confronted with racism, etc. throughout our lives, confronted with betrayal and confronted with politics, working against us ...
Germany is a country that has open right-wing terrorist cells in the state ... an NSU 2.0 already exists, there are right-wing terrorist groups in the KSK, Bundeswehr, etc. and the state is ignoring that, the media too - in the Thuringian Forest, Nazis are training for one "scenario", etc ... but yes, we are all stupid and unable to understand the power Europe and the United States have - we don't know anything

Mate, you and I don’t live in Turkey, so please take your RTE worship and go elsewhere. If you cannot see how pathetic AKP has become, then I have nothing more to say to you.

you are making fun of ppl trying to live in Turkey. While the elders may have social welfare support. That money comes at the expense of the taxes being paid. And when there are so much unemployment, Turkey will have to keep printing money. It’s here already, Babacan said he expects BNP to regress to around 600.
