Depends on the class, commandos for example get heavy rations, infantry, gendermerie they all get good food in their barracks. Their callorie needs are being calculated and kept under check.

Most people still lose weight but let's face it, not every unit has the same level of discipline.

As for your second question, I think that's a No
I mean the last time I checked the mountain commandos were marching with canned stuff in their backpacks.

I was eating canned beans last year in Turkey and I asked a guy if he wanted some and he said "No. I ate canned food everyday in the military."

He probably exaggerated everyday but apparently he ate alot of canned food.
