Erdogan is also trying to capture areas in Syria which falls under Kurdish authority. Assad would not have had direct control over these lands.
Syria was a lot more peaceful before foreign powers invaded it on the pretext of protecting its citizens from Assad. I am not saying that Assad is a dove. Ofcourse he needs to be brutal at times to continue his dictatorship. But the effort to depose him has descended Syria from a functional nation to an almost failed state.
It is similar to how Iraq suffered after the forceful removal of Saddam.

Outside intervention rarely achieves the peace that is planned.
