Trump requests S. Korea's medical device support to fight COVID-19 in phone summit with Moon
01:41 March 25, 2020

SEOUL, March 24 (Yonhap) -- U.S. President Donald Trump expressed hope Tuesday, in a phone conversation with President Moon Jae-in, that South Korea could provide medical equipment support, according to Cheong Wa Dae.

Moon replied that his government would provide "maximum support" if available, as the two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation in the fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic.

He then pointed out that approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) might be required. In response, Trump said he would make immediate action for that "within today," Cheong Wa Dae spokesman Kang Min-seok said.

In the 23-minute conversation, made at Trump's "urgent request," Moon said the establishment of a US$60 billion currency swap line between the two countries earlier this week was a "very timely" measure to help stabilize the international financial market.

Earlier in the day, Moon also had phone talks with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia in connection with the COVID-19 outbreak that has affected the entire world.

  • The US is pushing South Korea to pay more to support the US military presence on the peninsula, less than a year after Seoul agreed to increase its host-nation financial contribution.
  • Trump administration officials have argued that since South Korea is a wealthy nation, it can afford to pay more, but experts say the demands and ongoing negotiations are likely to strain US forces there and alienate South Korea.

Secretary of Defense Mark Esper is turning up the heat on South Korea to increase how much it is contributing in host-nation support, a move that comes after South Korea already boosted its financial contribution in host-nation support earlier this year.

Esper, who is in Seoul, said Friday that South Korea "is a wealthy country and could and should pay more to help offset the cost of defense." There are more than 28,000 US troops based in South Korea.

"It is crucial that we conclude the (defense pact) ... with increased burden-sharing by the Republic of Korea before the end of the year," Esper said during a news conference, per Reuters.

South Korea has contributed to major US projects in its country like Camp Humphreys, the largest US base overseas that's been built up over the last decade.

Actually Trump should ask China. China produce way more medical equipment than Korea and is already ramping up its factories.
But his ego gets in the way.
