Picture: Design of Feni bridge to link Tripura with Chittagong sea port.

Agartala: The Centre has agreed to fund the construction of a bridge over River Feni in South Tripura on National Highway 44, connecting the state to Bangladesh, Tripura chief secretary Yashpal Singh said on Thursday. The bridge will connect Sabroom in Tripura to the Chittagong sea port in Ramgarh town of south Bangladesh.

The bridge has become important for Tripura and other northeastern states after Bangladesh allowed India to use the Chittagong sea port, only 70 kilometres from the southern town of Tripura.

Easy access to the sea port will open up the south Asian market for Tripura and it will be easier to ferry goods via waterways from other parts of India, bypassing the chicken neck of Siliguri and the high terrain of Assam and Meghalaya.

"The bridge will not only reduce travel time, risk and cost, but also integrate Tripura with the south Asian market. It will boost trade, commerce and investment in the state," Singh argued.

Singh said the proposal for the construction of the bridge had been pending for a long time. There were several phases of meetings with the Union ministry of DoNER and other related ministries over the past three years for funding the project. Recently, the ministry decided to fund the bridge construction, including the cost of land acquisition on both sides of India and Bangladesh and the construction of the approach road connecting the National Highways of both countries, he said.

The state government has finally begun the work, estimating an expenditure of Rs 70 crore from the state exchequer. In the meantime, due to cost escalation, the project estimate has risen to Rs 125 crore.

"We have started the work but it had been little slow because of the delay in arrangement of funds. Since the Centre agreed to provide the revised estimate, the work will start on a priority basis. The bridge should be functional in the next two years," Singh said.

He, however, pointed out that DoNER secretary Navin Verma, in his recent visit to the state, asserted that the Centre has decided to avoid the lengthy process of obtaining clearance of any project and the DoNER has devised a method for faster decision-making for any project in the northeast.

the present regime in India seems to have taken up the cause of integrating a lot of the North East with BD. In Hind sight, it seems that in Land Border Agreement between the two nations (India and BD), even though the Indian side lost a good bit of land, it is making up for the loss by better integration of its hinterlands to water ways and ports. A good sign of some positive thinking.

BD needs to start making all neighbouring states of India into satellite economies.

What is so funny here?

BD has a population of 160 million which is similar to the combined population of the neighbouring states. The booming BD economy can e a source of imports and investment for poor Indian states like West Bengal and Tripura.

Sad Part is, India has no money to construct anything abroad. Have you ever seen any completed Indian project anywhere in Bangladesh? All they can make is Big plan with Big Mouth.

Hope it materialises soon, Indians are good planner but very bad at implementation.

The enemy is strong when in the guise of a friend.

We would have understood even when you wouldn't had made it italics, bold & changed it's color

How can an Indian colony (read BD) make Indian state a satellite?? o_O

Indian colony

An Indian Colony is a Native American settlement associated with an urban area. Although some of them become official Indian reservations, they differ from most reservations in that they are located where Native Americans could find employment in mainstream American economy. Many were originally formed without federal encouragement or sanction.
