Tourist Trains planned for Pakistan

Sir but i don't understand, how can pilgrims who visit these holy places out of love for god be declared "fundos"? Are yatri's visiting hassan abdal fundo's? are Catholics visiting the Vatican fundos?

yes Sir. They all are.

Non fundoo guys go to Disney World to see man made fairies and angels.


Fundoo means very very very religious person. the term should not be considered bad.

Fundoos go to all the holy places to feel divinely made fairies and angels. Even some go to Raiwind.


Please we do not have to jump in our shorts the moment someone says anything related to our worshipping and especially idol worshipping.

Fundo would be a very subjective term, each to their own? Just as i could say that 16 year old is fanatically obsessed with call of duty, he too is a fundo of sorts, just his fanaticism is linked to a man made object and not something that is divine in nature.

Anyway, who am I or You to judge anyone, i have my share of skeletons in my closet so leave judgement up to God and him alone.

While I have no particular love for fundos I think Pakistan's tourism is suffering from the fallout of WOT. It is essentially political in nature. Hopefully things will get better one day.

WOT started only after 2001.

Our tourism industry based on foriegn tourists has been slowly forked up since the bad times of ZA Bhutto, with major decline during Zia time.

But Islamists have been killing the industry for a long long time.

$tupid attack and burning of American Embassy back in 79 was not the result of WOT.


So please keep the historic accuracy in mind.

What about infrastructure?
Has that been developed for tourists to take advantage of these areas?

Like India has really bad infra and consequently many tourists spend less time/no time at many places because its a pain to reach - clogged roads, dirty neighbourhoods, etc.

To give you an example - the tourism to Taj jumped by twice once the new expressway to Agra from Delhi was made.

Same for other places. Western tourists like infra and cleanliness. India lacks both and so is not able to get as many tourists as we should.

Not a personal question sir, yes i have only been there once for Umra, still not blessed enough to visit for Hajj.. , BTW i do agree with you on the monopoly of the Saudi state on the holy mosques, but such is the world of man, corrupt and contorted.

I think in our history, we only had Nawaz Sharif's first government who truly tried to develop infrastructure and get Pakistan out of stone age.

Well they were quickly thrown out and replaced by socialist Bibi.


Now that Bibi is gone

We have new Islamist socialist aka Taliban Khan.

So infrastructure will continue to lack, because current government will never get enough energy freed from daily dharnas.


I think we are destined to remain poor and marginalized for a long time.

Nahi yar, you will not be attacked, not by me at least . Hajj is something i intend to do( god willing) with my family in the future. But yes you are right, once in a lifetime is more than enough, the rest is just khana puri!

You are spot on in saying god is not found in the buildings of brick in mortar but in the hearts of those who believe. That said, i still find it an amazing site to visit that most magnificent of places, to walk the path that countless Muslims before me walked and will continue to walk long after i am long gone and forgotten.

True, Zia especially was the Mardood who destroyed so many thing of tolerance and tourism but people here will tell you that there still tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of foreign tourists well into the 90's. Pakistan was NEVER properly sold as a tourist destination but people still came in fairly decent numbers. The merchants in the bazars of Karachi will tell you many tourists, including from the fmr. Soviet Union, shopping around.
The declined started particularly after mid 2000's and since the Lal Masjid operation against the TERRORISTS situation has been very bad.

There is still a very small stream of devoted Japanese, dutch, german, russian and polish climbers that make annual pilgrimages to Pakistan. When the incident in the mountains happened, i was scared some of my friends would be without a livelihood (high altitude porters and mountain guides), but after speaking to a few on their way back, many were undaunted and promised to come back next year...

So all is not lost.
