China forcing Uighur Muslims observe Ramadan ban
During the day, school staff hand out food and water to students and force them to consume it in front of them.

World Bulletin / News Desk

The Chinese authorities in the province of East Turkestan (Xinjiang), have been forcing Muslim Uighurs to break their fasts after it was declared that he observance of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan was banned.

A Muslim university student, who wished to remain anonymous, in the city of Kashgar, explained that the authorities had increased their restrictions on religious observance during the month of Ramadan, including a ban on praying and fasting.

"When they notice we are fasting they force us to break our fast. When we refuse to break our fast they threaten to expel us and not give us our diploma," the student said.

The student also said that dorm rooms were being inspected at the time of suhur, or the morning meal, to check who was up eating. Those caught would be black-listed.

During the day, school staff hand out food and water to students and force them to consume it in front of them.

Restaurants are also forced to close before iftar, the fast-breaking time, and those that don't face a fine.

However, despite the risks, some Uighur students continue to fast.

Uighurs are the native Turkic population of East Turkestan, and have long complained of decades of religious suppression at the hands of the Chinese authorities.

Fasting in Ramadan is one of the five pillars of practice in Islam, and requires all Muslims who are capable of doing so to stay away from eating and drinking from the onset of dawn till dusk during the lunar month.

China bans beards, veils from Xinjiang city's buses in security bid

(Reuters) - A city in China's restive western region of Xinjiang has banned people with head scarves, veils and long beards from boarding buses, as the government battles unrest with a policy that critics said discriminates against Muslims.

Xinjiang, home to the Muslim Uighur people who speak a Turkic language, has been beset for years by violence that the government blames on Islamist militants or separatists.

Authorities will prohibit five types of passengers - those who wear veils, head scarves, a loose-fitting garment called a jilbab, clothing with the crescent moon and star, and those with long beards - from boarding buses in the northwestern city of Karamay, state media said.

The crescent moon and star symbol of Islam features on many national flags, besides being used by groups China says want to set up an independent state called East Turkestan.

The rules were intended to help strengthen security through August 20 during an athletics event and would be enforced by security teams, the ruling Communist Party-run Karamay Daily said on Monday.

"Those who do not comply, especially those five types of passengers, will be reported to the police," the paper said.

In July, authorities in Xinjiang's capital Urumqi banned bus passengers from carrying items ranging from cigarette lighters to yogurt and water, in a bid to prevent violent attacks.

Exiled Uighur groups and human rights activists say the government's repressive policies in Xinjiang, including controls on Islam, have provoked unrest, a claim Beijing denies.

"Officials in Karamay city are endorsing an openly racist and discriminatory policy aimed at ordinary Uighur people," Alim Seytoff, the president of the Washington-based Uyghur American Association, said in an emailed statement.

While many Uighur women dress in much the same casual style as those elsewhere in China, some have begun to wear the full veil, a garment more common in Pakistan or Afghanistan than in Xinjiang.

Hundreds have died in unrest in Xinjiang in the past 18 months, but tight security makes it almost impossible for journalists to make independent assessments of the violence.

About 100 people were killed when knife-wielding attackers staged assaults in two towns in the region's south in late July, state media said, including 59 "terrorists" shot dead by police. A suicide bombing killed 39 people at a market in Urumqi in May.

Definitely, 35 million is not realistic. But, anyway, it does not change any of the facts about inhumane policies of Beijing about her own people, and specially about minorities like turkic minority.
BTW, in addition to your chants, I am wondering to know what would be the policy of your beloved Erdogan and your Wahabi friends? My guess, is having more business with China as a punishment for them? ;)

In contrast to all of their other policies, I don't disagree with Chinese about this particular policy. Islamism and wahabism and these stuff are a dangerous poison and would harm Uyghurs more than anything else.

The stuff that they banned aren't exclusive to wahabism. Beards, veils, hijabs, loose clothes are something that is part of islam so to ban them essentially means that the Chinese government is preventing Muslims from carrying out obligatory or recommended acts if they wish to ride the bus.

Those long taliban and arab style beards and Afghan style veils have an important and clear meaning and message. it means that the person carrying them is a terrorist moron. we don't need to sugarcoat these simple facts. Using Islam excuse, ... are also meaningless and lame. do you want to bring back stoning as well? it is another part of Islam.

Stop playing games man your just pinning islam to the taliban who by the way are violating Islamic rules all of the time just to trash islam.

You know very well that the chinese just banned things that are obligatory and or highly recommended for muslims to carry out which is another reason for people to get mad. China should just give everyone equal rights like there is in america where you can dress how you want. This the best way for them to control the region imo. With regard to stoning that is almost impossible to do because it would be very difficult to even prove if anyone committed an act worthy of that punishment so that even happening is highly unlikely. Im not going any further than that on the internet regarding this issue.

Come on dude. Don't be naive. Which laws of islam are violated by taliban or ISIS? To be perfectly honest, they are much much more close to the core of islam than you so called liberal muslims, whom are trying to change and distort islamic laws to make them look like appropriate for 21st century.

That's the most funny point. While islamist and islam consider zero rights for non-muslims and consider them as kafir and declare jihad on them and make them pay jizya, when they are placed as a minority, they cry crocodile tears and ask others to treat them like the western world. That does not work dude. If muslims want to keep their islamic standards and laws regarding human rights, it automatically make it legitimate for others to treat them with those standards.

Likely or unlikely does not change any facts. that's a law, and is practiced for 14 centuries. If it is an inhumane law, it should not be stated at the first place. that's the whole point.

The taliban sells drugs for example they massacre civilians and so does isis. Isis also robbed a bank. The list goes on and on. Also islamic scholars have condemned isis and have declared their caliphate illegitimate.

I see where you are coming from and I agree with your statement regarding the crocodile tears. I was thinking the same thing.

Inhumane is upto the society to decide I guess. They can choose between a few people getting stoned once in a while in exchange for getting rid of adultery or reducing adultery which muslims believe is something that is bad for various reasons. Some people may have no problem with adultery. Again this is all upto what direction a particular society wants to go. Everyone has an opinion about whether this is right or wrong but in the end both sides have good intentions.

Anyway lets agree to disagree because these conversations go on for hours and off topic and I don't have that many hours.:(

Did you know Chinese Qing dynasty Han Chinese also dressed differently and had one hair style to go with all the other religious and cultural crap.

Guess what, since 1911, we have been systematically destroying them. With a high during the cultural revolution.

I don't want to talk about the validity of religion and culture here, what I will talk about is Western countries have for the past century brought humiliation to Chin and pretty much all the world that isn't Western or even Western.

Maybe you are not done being bent over a table by the Western nations, but never again will China be under their power.

Yes it is unfair and yes it is forced. But so is occupation and servitude which will happen if you are not strong. If we truly didn't care about them, we would just let them rot in their backwards state rather than pull them into the 21st century.

Chinese culture is not better than Turks, this isn't the point. But in order to advance, they must be part of this world, rather than being "unique." Being yourself is what your mom tells you. You do that when you are grown up, you will more often than not fail.

As a side not, they are not Turks, they are Chinese. Just as we don't consider Philippines-"chinese" to be Chinese.

I understand your concerns and the reasoning behind these policies but what I would like to see is less restrictions which imo is better for china and the uyghurs.

Selling or using drugs is not against islam. That bank is also considered as غنيمة (spoils), and is considered as the property of whom who has captured them. These are all clear islamic laws. About islamic scholars, no reputable sunni islamic scholar from Saudi or Al-azhar (Egypt) has said any words against them. About those christians or Alevis, they are considered as اهل الحرب. just search for the laws regarding them and you would see that what ISIS has done is 100% islamic.

Dude, we are living in 21st century and I believe that we have realized that some stuff are inhumane. these are our common senses. our civilized common sense is against stoning and cutting hands, and marrying low age girls, ... is it right?
Anyway lets agree to disagree because these conversations go on for hours and off topic and I don't have that many hours.:(

I'm not sure about you, but I know what backwardness is. I have seen it with my own eyes. I'm talking Han Chinese.

They are stubborn, refuse to change, and thinks anything foreign is bad.

If we can't even change their clothing and a few traditions, how can we hope that they will adapt something that will change their fundamental belief?

You must pull a people kicking and screaming out of backwardness. Why do you think Han Chinese don't have cultural or religious clashes amongst ourselves? Cause we crushed it far more extremely than we are doing it with Xinjiang.

In 15-20 years, when Xinjiang is the Jewel of central Asia, who will remember today? Success has a way of erasing everything that came before it.

Another 'one china' obsessed one!

The soviet union was airing what you do now, the demise was inevitable tho.

.. keep telling the communist regime propaganda, In the end the humiliation cooked by The west is still bordering you, called Taiwan.

btw, the people in the occupied Turkestan are ethnic Turks by birth and muslims for centuries.
