The Problems being faced by the Pakistani Young Diaspora and 2nd gen

ethnic identity?
I am no longer sure what I was talking about ...I hate it when people ask details. Coz in UK, I have Arabs come over and start chatting with me in Arabic and I am like La Al lugha al-Arabia (I have literally learnt this sentence in a few languages to avoid confusion)....

I shrug and am like, well I am citizen of the planet earth :D

Had a Lebanoni who said I looked like a cousin, had an Omani friend who said I looked like her friend and so on

I shrug and am like, well I am citizen of the planet earth :D

I get often confused for being Arab mostly, and it annoys me as well

It doesnt annoy me at all...Though they do get confused when I tell them in Arabic I cant understand Arabic...Half have actually argued with me on my lack of knowledge in Arabic....some ACTUALLY thought being Pakistani would mean I know Arabic...Looks like Trump's confusion goes far and wide

Psychology :enjoy:

Yours? :D

Back on topic, the issues faced by diaspora are best resolved by them as they know best about their situation, and similarly, the problems faced by Pakistanis in their own country are best resolved by them alone, since they know the situation better than anybody else.

and therefore, this platform is allowing both sides to communicate :agree:

details are good to discuss because people in west often have less understanding about ethnic and religious differences i.e confuse beard and turban with Islam so even Sikhs become Muslim for them just because of beard and turban ..confuse Punjabi only with Sikhism when we have vast majority of Muslim Punjabi in Pakistan....confuse Urdu as languages of India when its national languages of Pakistan so I will also object when someone will identify me with country other than Pakistan

Objecting is fine...

I mean how many of us can differentiate a German from a Dutch based on facial features?
Or a Russian from an Ukrainian?
Or a Japanese from a Korean?

I always correct the people as politely as possible. I have learnt if you agree with a part of their sentence they become willing listeners :agree:

Huh not just him..My supervisor once asked me:
So you speak Arabic...I swear my mouth dropped open...Here was 1 of the foreleading in my field and that is what he asks me?! I think he realized he made a mistake coz he shifted uncomfortably...And I was like no, we dont my parent's generation did pick up some but they also picked up Persian :D

I guess ignorance is still a bliss

I don't know why we have to convince ABCD or young diaspora's to respect their roots and identity. It is something that should come naturally to them. Everyday, we have foreigners like Jeremy McLellan, Eva Zu Beck or Mark Wiens who come to Pakistan and show the world what we are all about. Like all nations we've got our ups and downs but we should be united under one faith and disciplined under one identity. Its rise of a new Pakistan that has fought terrorism and now tackling corruption. It is by the vote of emerging youth that we are here and they should be proud.

He will next say word
desi ghee
desi ande
desi murgi

should be replaced with some Persian word

I agree with @OsmanAli98 and @Indus Pakistan on this one.

Desi, originally meaning own country (apna Des) should only apply to Pakistan.

It is ok to use for food products as Desi in that sense means Pakistani in Pakistan, similar to “Proudly Made in USA” items in America.

However, Us Western Pakistanis should stop using the word Desi to refer to ourselves overseas as the term has been hijacked by Indians and Bangladeshis (and to a lesser extent Sikhs) to try to create and further the propaganda that the partition and the identity of Pakistan is artificial.

The word Desi has been weaponised to promote the Indian strategic and cultural objectives in the West to further dilute the identity of Pakistan.

This is why I always tell every American Pakistani not to use the term and instead use Pakistan or Pakistani when referring to our culture or people.

You are free to agree with them and I am free to disagree with them . Nothing is anti national or anti Islamic about word desi. Indians hijack everything including Pakistan food, clothes, languages, civilisation etc When some Pakistani Punjabi refer to word desi (food/clothes) they actually mean local Punjabi food so next we will say Pakistani should not call themselves Rajputs, Jats, Gujjar , Bajwa etc because Indian also use these names so we will not be true Pakistani . afghani also confuse word afghan with pahstuns and according to them every Pashtun is afghan so should we care what they say or think? no

Exactly my point well articulated again by @Pan-Islamic-Pakistan , We must cut off any relations to this "Desi" identity complex" we Diaspora Pakistanis and Pakistanis have gotten use to, its a failure of our Government to form a coherent identity or push "Soft Culture" abroad as a people and a nation, I blame the rising provincialism and fundementalism in Pakistan since the 1970s because we failed to tap in to unify Pakistanis under Pakistani flag and its symbols, instead we gave all the culture to the Gangas and we let our media industry fell prey to idiot wahhabis who could not handle taboo subjects that needed to be discussed

There is no one culture in Pakistan because every ethnic group( Punjabi culture, Pahstun culture, balcoh culture, Sindhi culture) etc has their own languages, foods. culture and traditions so Pakistan is diverse county which you cannot unify under one culture

And thats why we are not successful we need to be unified not be some "multicultural petri dish" with a divided Govt and provinces that act like autonomous zones rather than working for the benefit of its people why is Balochistan poor despite it being rich in resources while Punjab has all the industry and elite f...ck that we need unified identity now and ever and I cant wait in next couple generations when Pakistanis will be unified as one people not act so provincial @Pan-Islamic-Pakistan

You cannot create new identities in 1947 lol we have tried to supress Bangla cultural identity and we have seen the outcome of it. People of Pakistan have cultural identity prior to creation of Pakistan because different ethnic groups used to reside in geographical location which we call Pakistan now which is our national identity . no need to be insecure about word desi which (as said before) refer only in sense to express that you are more into local and traditional stuffs referred as Desi. I don't think western even have clue about this word
