What's new

The new war epic film is a masterpiece ''The battle at lake Changjin''

Did this movie do well in Pakistani box office? Curious to know if there is good reception for mainstream Chinese movies in Pakistan :-)

I don't think they even get released in Pak, not really that big a market is it?

Of course it is a big market for movies. Movie tickets are affordable for developing countries. Hollywood movies get released in Pakistan, no?

I remember some Jackie Chan movies used to get released in India. They had a big following! These days we don't get good kung-fu movies. :undecided:

Not anymore. Covid-19 has battered the North American box office so badly that Chinese comedies are now routinely outperforming big-budget MCU films.

I think you have it in reverse. As long as China remains the world's largest film market, foreign film studios will be forced to cater to the Chinese audience if they want to make money. That's how supply and demand works. If there is demand for patriotic war movies in China, someone smart will supply it. The weak will always cater to the strong. The small will cater to the large. Don't compare China to a U.S. protectorate like South Korea.

I'll give an example from this year: Shang-Chi.

Shang-Chi is currently the highest-grossing U.S. domestic film in 2021, surpassing Black Widow strangely enough. It has a Chinese-Canadian male lead. It was probably designed by Disney to be a cash grab for Chinese money. Even funnier, it failed to secure a release date in China, so the bulk of the box office must have come from foreigners. Disney still made it, and foreigners still watched it.

China being the world's biggest market for films does little for China's soft power because it is not China's ideas and creations being exported. Just like China being a huge market for foreign luxury goods does nothing for China's image as a producer of cheap products if it isn't able to export luxury goods of its own.

Yeah they do but I am not too sure if Chinese film industry is too hot on releasing thier films in Pak...
Ofcourse GOP won't have issues, in an ideal scenario we get to export our stuff and they can export thier movies, dramas to Pak

But I genuinely don't know why are they not persuing foreign markets

I just feel they're satisfied with dominating the Chinese market, making money from Thier and calling it a day

That HK based movie industry was something

I wonder what happened? Cause it clearly declined

It's world wide rank. Not China VS US. Demand lures money and talents. Hollywood being Hollywood is not because Americans are so good at making movies. The world used-to-be biggest market formed Hollywood. China being biggest movie market will definitely help China to absorb money and talents from outside. Which will indirectly weaken US cultrual influence.

Your view on the N.Korea Kim is just hindsight. In 1950, North Korea seemed more orthodox than South Korea. Kim Il-sung was the leader of anti-Japanese occupation guerrilla. Syngman Rhee was nobody but a puppet president who lived in US during ww2. And most military officers in South Korea army were from former Japanese empire army. Record says more 70% war crimes to civilians were committed by South Korea troops. See which side was eviler back then.

North Korea had better economic condition during cold war. If you lived in that time, would you say US supported wrong side?

Read my previous post again. China doesn't need to export anything directly if FOREIGN film studios (like Disney) are willing to do all the heavy lifting. China and Chinese people are still the primary beneficiary of the soft power.

Let's go back to my previous example of the movie Shang-Chi. It was produced by Disney. China didn't have to spend a single renminbi. The movie has a Chinese-Canadian male lead right on the movie poster. It features an all-Asian cast playing characters with Chinese names. And because it was made by Disney (with a story written by Western writers) they are able to "sanitize" it and make it more palatable for Western audiences. What was the result? Western audiences gobbled it up. Shang-Chi is currently the highest-grossing U.S. domestic film in 2021, surpassing Black Widow headlined by a far more recognizable lead actress in Scarlett Johansson. It has completely blown away Suicide Squad 2021 with Margot Robbie.

Notice how Disney is releasing a new "Chinese" film every year. They released Mulan last year. Shang-Chi this year. Do you think they would do this if China wasn't the world's largest film market? Do they make movies like this for India?

By the way, the U.S. box office is unlikely to recover this year or anytime soon. The damage from Covid-19 could be permanent. This is from the experts:

Gower Street currently predicts that China’s 2021 box office total could hit $8 billion, which would likely make it the global No. 1 by a large margin. The consultancy estimates that the North American box office will come in at around $5.2 billion this year.

So Hollywood could be kowtowing like this to China for a long time to come.

In the meantime, people like you shall enjoy the new Bond movie with two black Bond girls. Don't you understand that this is a historic achievement for diversity? Aren't these two black women pretty? I bet they're right up your alley lol.

Disney makes the most money from Disneyland not movies. The only reason they making Chinese movies becoz they want Chinese to go visit Disneyland.

Virtually all of Disney's business segments are adversely impacted by Covid-19. Theme parks, hotels, resorts, cruise lines, and MCU movies at the theater are all affected. Any business that relies on the movement of people is ultimately affected by the virus. Why do you think the Western mainstream media is so desperate to pressure people to take the vaccine? Because their entire media/travel/entertainment empire will collapse if they don't get this pandemic under control.

At this point, China is the only large country with a successful Covid-zero strategy. Case counts remain low and Chinese people are going to the movies, traveling (internally), and spending money. If this continues, Disney (and other media giants) will have no choice but to kowtow to China if they want their business to survive.

I’m sorry but it is laughable that you think Shang chi is a Chinese movie. It’s basically an orientalist depiction of Chinese culture based on a script written by a white man. It has nothing to do with actual Chinese culture and it does nothing for China’s soft power. It would be akin to a western fashion label like Dolce Gabbana coming out with a kimono inspired summer wear and using a couple Asian models with exaggerated ethnic features on their runway.

People around the world when watching Shang Chi would not gain an interest in China, they’d gain an interest in Hollywood as that was where it originated. It just adds to America’s soft power.

That’s nothing in comparison to the soft power created by Korean movies written by Koreans and taking place in an authentic Korean cultural context. Hollywood movies written with a slant for the Chinese market do not spread influence for China, they spread influence for America. The fact that you’d think they were any way a vessel for Chinese influence really just demonstrates how much of an ABC you are and how American you actually are.

And yes, I do find some Black women fine as ****? You got an issue with that? Black, Latina and Middle Eastern women have the best bodies IMO.

Google "chosin reservoir battle", you will be surprised by the sheer amount of reflection.
China, Chosin, Tencent and Wuxia are living rentfree in the heads of these brainwashed American shills.
They are just posting these "lol we dont care dont know" posts as a automatic coping mechanism because the overtone is shifting in favour of a comprehensive and captivating China and whereas Americas vomit is not taken serious anymore unless the persons daily bread and supper depends on carrying the U.S. terror regimes water. Leaving a stinking mark on some wall and run away from the truth is their last grasp.

They are mad that Chinese are not afraid to just say a Chinese movies, games and products are great without comparing themself to any American garbage or making excuses. Thats real soft power.
