Shahzeb Khan case: Shahrukh Jatoi bribed porter to escape, says IO
ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) resumed hearing of the Shahzeb Khan’s murder suo moto case Tuesday where the investigating officer told that Shahrukh Jatoi escaped by bribing a porter, Geo News reported.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard the murder case of 20-year-old Shahzeb Khan here today, who was shot dead on December 25 in Defence area of Karachi.
During today’s proceedings, the investigating officer Mubeen told the bench that Shahrukh escaped by bribing a porter at the airport. He said that Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) should tell the bench about back doors at airport from where people are sent abroad stealthily. The officer further told that he contacted a porter to go abroad and he told the officer that those gates have been shut now after the orders issued by the chief justice.
He said that FIA should apprise the bench about the shift in-charge and deputy director’s duties.
CJ Iftikhar instructed Shahid Hayat to produce results. He further added that the porter is being made a scapegoat in the case. He said that the court cannot sit and watch silently as people are being murdered.
The Chief Justice addressed the DIG Shahid Hayat and said that he will be responsible for any ignorance, as he had delegated the investigation of the case to a sub-inspector.
He, then, questioned the DIG if he had seized the travel documents of Shahrukh Jatoi on the basis of which he managed to escape from the country.
On this, Shahid Hayat told the court that the documents are with the traveling agency and it is the duty of FIA to find out how Shahrukh managed to flee.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry remarked that this case should set an example so that the culprits should know that they will not be spared if any such incident occurred again. He, then, told the DIG that he should have arrested the aides involved in Shahrukh’s escape.
Justice Gulzar Ahmed remarked that police department is the most ignorant one as every one knows about the killers except police.
Chief Justice alleged that it is possible that police have declared Shahrukh Jatoi as minor intentionally and asked the DIG if he has scrutinized his educational certificates. Responding to this, DIG Shahid Hayat told that an identity card number was issued to him but no picture was found from the record.
He told that investigations are underway to find out how the identity card number was issued to Shahrukh if he was not 18 years old. His date of birth, as per his passport, is November 22, 1995, he told.
Chief Justice Iftikhar asserted that the investigations should be carried out in a transparent manner, regardless of the influence of any party involved. Legal proceedings will not halt in any case, he added.
Later, the hearing was adjourned till February 4.
It may be mentioned that an anti-terrorism court on Saturday ordered Shahrukh Jatoi, a prime suspect in Shahzeb Khan’s murder case, to be sent to a juvenile jail after a medical report showed he was a juvenile.
The court sent four suspects to prison, and directed the investigation officer (IO) to submit a charge sheet against them.
The chief justice had taken suo moto notice of the brutal murder on 20-year-old Shahzeb Khan, based on press clippings carrying the story regarding his killing. Shahzeb Khan was gunned down in Karachi on December 25th, while police failed to make any progress due to immense political pressure.
The killing mobilised hundreds of the people against unquestioned authority that people with political connection enjoy in the country.
