I have a question to my brothers from muslim world here at PDF. We have heard alot about The 'Islamic Bomb' in western media when Pakistan conducted it's Nuclear Tests back in late 90's. Please Share your experiences, how you and others reacted to the news in your countries. Jazzak Allah.

PAKISTAN: The Islamic Bomb

PAKISTAN: The Islamic Bomb - TIME

. .
The Islamic Bomb? What does that even mean? Are nukes in The Koran or Hadith?

They could just say: "Oh look! Pakistan has a nuke!!"

Yeah, This the the term western media used. They didn't call Indian a Hindu Bomb or the Israeli a Jew Bomb but here it was an Islamic Bomb apparantly  ... By the way how your people reacted to it is my question.

The term Islamic Bomb has also been used by Pakistan's officials, not just by the media in Western countries: from Zulfikar ali Bhutto who invented this term to COAS General Beg and DG ISI Gul and AQ Khan.

In my opinion when this term is being used in the media it refers to the possibility that Pakistan will share its nuclear capabilities with Muslim countries. Two main possibilities: helping Muslim countries to develop nuclear weapons (like the Pakistani help to Iran, Libya, and North Korea, and the Pakistani offers to Iraq, KSA, Syria, UAE, and Egypt) or providing Muslim countries with some sort of a nuclear umbrella - like the one that was discussed between Pakistan and KSA. The other possibility is for an Islamic regime in Pakistan which might perceive the nuclear capabilities as belong to the Ummah and do one or the two options mentioned above.

As the Zionist above mentioned the term "Islamic bomb" has been used by Pakistani officials themselves, not sure if they coined it but they certainly used it. They argued that an "Islamic bomb" was an absolute imperative since Muslims are large proportion of the world population and to counterbalance the "Jewish", "Hindu" and "Crusader" bomb. Although I definitely agree with the intentions of the pakistani officials using the term, the media has abused the hell out of it that it now no longer means what it was originally intended. Now it is conventional wisdom that "Islamic bomb" means a bomb that is sought to be used for the ultimate Jihad or some other nonsense reasons.

Pakistan helped NK to develop nuclear weapons although it was not a Muslim country. The reason was eventually cooperation in KRL's long-range missile project. Pakistan also cooperated with China in developing nuclear weapons and it is not a Muslim country.

When Pakistan needed for technology it had no problem to exchange them with nuclear export.

Dont see much wrong with that.. you do what you need to survive.

Needles to say that Pakistan gave numerous commitments not to help other countries to develop nuclear weapons programmes. Furthermore, Pakistan cannot complain that it is perceived as a rogue country in the West when it helps notorious regimes such a in Iran, NK, and Libya to develop weapons of mass destruction.

Too old a news probably

Maybe its old news. However ZAB was the first person to trumpet the 'Islamic Bomb' bit. And he even declared that he (along with Pakistanis) would eat grass till it happened. Bhutto was the master of the theatrical. And he never hesitated to fall back on that option. It worked most times, except with Zia.

Of course that label was used for the reason given by Santro. Apart from that Bhutto was relentlessly driven to try and establish his image on the world stage, so he attempted to don the mantle of the Leading statesman of the Muslim world. This name was an expedient towards that aim.

North Korea entered the picture much later, much after the expression had been coined. NK was taken on board in the time of Benazir, ZAB's daughter. Through the exertions of AQ Khan and some Generals, of course with the tacit wink from Benazir.
