The Balance of Air power in Sub-continent considering latest inductions of Platforms / capabilities by PAF

For conceptual clarity, a "hypersonic missile" and a "hypersonic glide vehicle" are two different types of systems, correct? Also, would it be correct to say, "a HGV can be a hypersonic missile, but a hypersonic missile need not be a HGV?" @SQ8 @MilSpec

My understanding at Base Level :

Broadly speaking, the slowest missiles are cruise missiles, which are essentially drone planes.
Though they may initially ride a rocket booster launched from the ground or a submarine, they go on to cruise through the atmosphere like a jet-powered plane.

Ballistic missiles, meanwhile, are essentially suborbital rockets, operating on the principle that what goes up must come down.

When launched, they can climb to altitudes up to 1,200 miles (2,000 kilometers) — much higher than satellites or space stations in low Earth orbit.

They can also reach speeds of up to several miles per second before reentering the atmosphere. However, their ballistic nature also makes their trajectories predictable, and therefore vulnerable to missile defense systems.

In General broad terms - Hypersonic Missile HSM is a Maneuverable weapon system which flies at least at the speed of Mach 5. Hypersonic weapons travel in the upper atmosphere at about 6,200kmph (3,852mph).

Conventional hypersonic weapons use only kinetic energy i.e. energy derived from motion, to destroy unhardened targets or even underground facilities.


Hypersonic weapons can challenge detection and defence due to their speed, manoeuvrability and low altitude of flight.

HSM Further classified into :

  • Hypersonic Glide Vehicles HGV
  • Hypersonic Cruise Missile HCM
HGV are supposed to leave the Earth’s atmosphere and then plunges back into it. These HGVs are to be launched from a rocket before "Gliding to the intended target". Hence HGV are a type of Warhead for BMs that can maneuver and Glide at Hyper Sonic Speeds.

Very Similar to Maneuverable Re Entry Vehicle MaRV - Difference being HGVs are separated from Rocket Boasters shortly after Launch - While MaRVs can only maneuver just before the impact

HCM are powered by 'Air breathing high speed engines or SCRAM - JETS', Which fly Low and at extremely high speeds
after acquiring their target.

Interestingly - The new Chinese HGV Concept is reported as "This weapons system consists of two parts:

-A fractional orbital bombardment system (FOBS)
-A hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV).

Neither FOBSs nor HGVs are new — but the combination of the two is...!

FOBS is the highest-velocity missile deployment system that currently exists. In a fractional orbital bombardment system, the rocket achieves low Earth orbit, which requires more energy than a ballistic missile has. But before completing one full orbit, a FOBS rocket deorbits by turning around and performing a retrograde engine burn. This allows it to slow down so that its trajectory intersects with its target on the ground.

LESSONS FROM UKRAINE - RUSSIA CONFLICT :

No war is a one-size-fits-all. There are some things that are unique about the conflict in Ukraine, yet there are also some important takeaways.

1- Control of Air was Poorly executed. Establishing Air Superiority first, eliminating enemy Air Defenses & then conducting A2G Sorties is more effective way then to use Russian Artillery method with reduced Air Success.

2- GBADs & Layered Air defense Structure for Defense are essential in modem warfare.

3- SHORADS, ATGMs & Manpads pose a serious threat to enemy assets.

4- SEAD - DEAD Capability is not easy to execute & its role has been highlighted. Extended Range & Precision for such missions are critical.

5- Mechanized Armour movement needs Effective Air Cover, Close Air Support & Infantry movement to succeed.

6- Combined Arms War fighting Strategy is successful provided its demonstrated correctly.

7- Electronic Warfare & UAVs have an Effective role to play in future combats , working within 'a system of systems'.


8- The Effectiveness of Traditional Low trajectory Terrain hugging Subsonic Missiles vs Low reaction time Extremely High Speed Hypersonic Weapons is examined very carefully.

9- Precision Stand off Munitions & thier deployment in adequate quantities availability is Critical.

10- Miniature Shells, Rockets etc with Nuclear warheads & Tactical Weapons with Low Yield have a stake in modern warfare.

-The Secret/Strategic Funds (which includes the ISI’s budget and nuclear/strategic weapons maintenance and development programs).

This year only the M/DOE value of 1,800 billion was published. However, in the past other values were also published and extrapolating the same,
An assessment of the value of the other three parts includes

  • Around 1 billion USD (+/- 200 million) for the modernisation programme
  • Around 1.5 billion USD for military pensions
  • Around 1.8 billion for the classified fund.

This puts our TDE value (or more commonly known as a country’s defence budget) at somewhere around 10-11 Billion USD or 2,800 Billion PKR to 3,100 Billion PKR.

While slower than a conventional ballistic reentry vehicle, HGVs’ higher maneuverability and lower-altitude flight make them harder to track and predict their flight path, challenging legacy ballistic missile defense systems

The missile has a length of around 11 m and weighs around 15,000 kg.

Fattah and kinzal are Hypersonic ballistic missiles.

Ground Launched Fattah has exo/endo steering mechanism and the KE comes from the second-stage motor which Khinzal lacks.

Air Launched Single Stage Khinzal is an Non-Separating vehicle with no dual exo/endoatmospheric steering, the KE comes from a high-speed booster .

Kh-47M2 "kinzhal" assumed to has second stage solid-propellant engine for warhead similar to Fattah,

But instead conventional fixed planer fins, Kinzhal use lattice fins.
