Tesco partners with Alpha Supermarket

KARACHI: Tesco PLC – United Kingdom’s (UK) largest and the world’s third largest retailer in terms of turnover – has partnered with Alpha Supermarkets in Pakistan to launch its food and non-food products in the country.

Alpha Supermarkets has plans to open 50 Express Stores in the country in the next three years, including three flagship stores in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. The company has already invested $2 million mainly in its Karachi’s store and it believes the investments will double in the next coming months.

“Tesco will only supply its products to Alpha Supermarkets, with which it has the exclusive partnership in Pakistan,” said Limestone Pvt Ltd Chairman Nadeem Hussain while talking to media at the British Deputy High Commission on Tuesday. “Tesco has not invested anything yet in this partnership, it may invest in the future but any future investment decision is up to its management.”

Hussain said Tesco’s partnership with Alpha Supermarkets is the reflection of its vision about Pakistan, a country which has over 30 million people with significant disposable income.

Pakistan’s middle class is growing fast and so are 3G services and smart phone penetration that are making the country a good place to attract new investors.

Tesco PLC is the second largest employer in the UK, after the government. It has recently increased its market share in the UK from 26% to 28%.

“Pakistan’s retail market is all set to grow faster in coming years. The country’s role in global retail market will also be growing due to its widening middle class and large population,” Director and CEO of Alpha Supermarkets Adnan Hamid commented.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Hamid informed that the company intends to open its second flagship store in Lahore at an investment of over $1 million.

British High Commissioner to Pakistan Thomas Drew CMG commented that this partnership between a Pakistani company and Tesco shows the confidence of British investors in Pakistan’s economy.

He said that Tesco is a popular brand and its partnership with a Pakistani player will further improve the economic relations between the two countries.

Head of New Market Tesco Stores Limited Jared Lebel said that Pakistan and the UK have already strong economic links and you will see them improving in the coming years.

Lebel said that his company invests over £1 billion every year to improve its services that it provides in 11 countries across Asia and Europe.

Tesco stands for tesa cohen , now nothing against the name or religion but it's an irony when she give millions of pound in aid to Israel.

Last time during the conflict she paid Israeli govt. equal to one week salary of Tesco employee as emergency fund.

Its good move as Tesco will provide quality products which is missing in Pakistani market. Hope price is also as reasonable as we get in UK

Pakistan has to create its own retail brands and make them with the help of govt and private partnership it will boost business activities and interest for investors too as Pakistan have more population it will help to the cater the country men needs as well as more tax collections for govt too instead of inviting international companies which only comes with costly products and loot the money and resend back to their home countries. UAE, Singapore,Qatar those countries making local brand names manufacturing, packing and producing locally and marketing them with chain of retail stores.

instead of giving billions of rupees in loans to students which are wasted in less profit oriented things by those unemployed students govt should create Pakistani brand name chain of stores with different products put unemployed youth there with partnership of 25% 50%, 75% etc like and apply digital accounting systems for stock ordering cash handling and auditing it will give massive results for tax collection and profits and will help to eradicate unemployment too.

No use. Already Utility Stores chain is there low quality and govt. corruption.
Waste of public money without output.
Always private chains work.

Good development, TESCO UK is already in China, Malaysia, Turkey, etc.. There is a slight concern, TESCO also withdraws as fast as it enters market for example USA, where they could'nt find any profit in their operations. IT came with a grand plan for 90+ retail in planning, and ended their operations in US by 2013 with a stake in another. TESCO would have to compete with established Imtiaz Super Store, Bin Hashim and others in Pakistan. Hope to see Giant stores, Panda [Saudi company Savola owned] also in PAkistan. REtail chains should be researching more in places like Peshawar, Quetta, Multan apart from Karachi & Lahore, where there is untapped potential.

Good from tax collection prespective, large retail giants are easier to collect tax from

Also these centers do create more Hygenic , markets which do contribute positively for overall community food & nutritional needs.

Not to mention many jobs are creted by such giant supermarkets

Traditionally Local markets are generally dominated by Local groups in Supermarket sector , rarely external players come to dominate but not uncommon

Prices tend to be a bit higher in Supermarkets , however the experience to shop in airconditioned building and flexibility to pay with credit card makes things very easy for people

Cash transactions are drastically reduced
