Terror war Pakistan’s fight: Petraeus

ISLAMABAD: The US Centcom chief General David Petraeus has said that, during his discussions with Pakistani officials about the nature of threat to Pakistan in the war against terror, he sees this as not America’s but actually Pakistan’s war.

Speaking to the US media networks after completing his first official visit abroad since assuming command on October 31, 2008, he said: “In general, there is mutual agreement on the nature of the threat in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, a threat that they increasingly see as a threat to Pakistan’s existence. This is not our war that Pakistan is waging ... this is their war and it is a result of extremists carrying out acts of truly indiscriminate violence.”

Officials, when asked to comment on the statement, said they did not need to comment on this specific statement nor was there any need to welcome it or otherwise. “At times, the fight against militancy endangers Pakistan’s sovereignty. To prevent such a situation, yes, we say this is our war. However, there is also the fact that foreign troops entering into Pakistan undermines our cooperation,” PPP Spokesman Farhatullah Babar told The News.

Military sources say they welcome the fact that this is being seen as Pakistan’s war, since this war has a domestic angle. The US Embassy, in a statement about the recent visit, said that during his visit Petraeus met with both senior Pakistan civilian and military leadership, discussing a wide range of topics from Pakistani sovereignty, the nature of the al-Qaeda threat within the Fata, to the longstanding and ever increasing mutual cooperation between the two nations.

General Petraeus met President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, National Security Adviser Mehmud Ali Durrani, Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Tariq Majid, Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and DG ISI Lieutenant General Ahmad Shuja Pasha.

Petraeus ended his visit to Islamabad on Tuesday, visiting soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines assigned to the Office of Defence Representative to Pakistan prior to visiting civilian and military officials in Peshawar.

During his visit to Peshawar, he had very positive and candid discussions with the NWFP governor and chief minister as well as the commanders of the 11th Corps and the Frontier Corps. Additionally, he took a tour, by helicopter, of the NWFP and the Fata.
