TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A survey released on Tuesday (Feb. 23) revealed that only 1.3 percent of Taiwanese would accept a Chinese-made COVID-19 vaccine and 72.7 percent of young adults would prefer a vaccine developed in Taiwan.

On Tuesday, Global Views announced the results of a survey on the willingness of Taiwanese citizens to take the various new coronavirus vaccines. The poll was carried out from Feb. 4 to 7 on Taiwanese aged 18 and over and collected 1,145 valid responses.

Minister of Health and Welfare and CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) has stated on numerous occasions that Taiwan will not import COVID-19 vaccines manufactured in China, citing the lack of data on their efficacy and safety as they were rushed to market. However, as Taiwan continues to languish low on the list of countries prioritized to receive the vaccine, some political leaders, such as former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) have called on the CECC to accept Chinese shots.

The safety of the Chinese-made shot BBIBP-CorV, an inactivated vaccine produced by China National Biotec Group (CNBG), a subsidiary of China National Pharmaceutical Group Corporation (Sinopharm) has come into question given the 73 local and systemic adverse reactions listed in its manual. Meanwhile, a Brazilian study of the vaccine developed by Sinovac Biotech Ltd, CoronaVac, found that the shot's efficacy rate is only 50.4 percent when "very mild infections" were included in its calculations.

When asked about their preferences for the country of origin, 54.8 percent said they want to be vaccinated with Taiwan-made shots, 31.8 percent chose European and American jabs, 5.7 percent said all vaccines are the same, and only 1.3 percent would accept vaccines made in China. Vaccines in China have been dogged by scandals for many years, greatly impacting Taiwanese trust in them.

The group most willing to take vaccines made in Taiwan are young adults between the ages of 18 and 29 at 72.7 percent. Those least willing to receive any COVID-19 vaccine were respondents aged 50 and over, with an education listed as "high school or below" and earning a monthly income of NT$40,000 (US$1,436) or less.

The overall results show that only 60.3 percent of Taiwanese citizens are willing to get a coronavirus vaccine, well below the international average of 74 percent. When asked about their confidence in the vaccines, 30 percent questioned their safety and ability to prevent infection, similar to the percentage unwilling to be vaccinated.

When asked if they would be willing to receive a vaccine if the government provided it free of charge, 60.3 percent of respondents said they would, while 32.7 percent said they would not and 7 percent said they are undecided. When broken down by gender, 65.4 percent of men are willing to receive the shots compared to only 55.5 percent of women.

In terms of occupations, those most willing to be inoculated were transportation workers at 79.4 percent and health care professionals at 75.8 percent.

Meanwhile, 59.8 percent expressed confidence in the ability of the vaccines to prevent infection, and 57.1 percent said they trust the safety of the new jabs, while 30 percent were not sure they are safe or effective. When asked if frontline epidemic prevention personnel should receive the shots first, 92.2 percent of respondents agreed.

As for suggestions on improving the willingness of the public to take the vaccines, 56.8 percent said the government should allay their fears about the safety of the shots, 20.9 percent said the procurement decisions and process should be made more transparent, and 8.3 said information about efficacy should be increased. In addition, 3.7 percent called for the shots to be made more conveniently available, 2.9 percent said the government should more clearly inform the public about the timeframe in which the vaccines will become available, and only 0.5 percent believe the government is doing a good job obtaining the jabs.

I highly doubt the accuracy of these news. Taiwannews is famous for spewing fake , anti China article.

...I think those planes buzzing their airzones may be a bigger influencer than the standard Chinese fakenews response to everything.

Polls shows Hong Kong residents' distrust of Chinese vaccines

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong people are less trusting of Chinese novel coronavirus vaccines than those made in Europe and the United States, with fewer than 30% of people questioned in a survey finding China’s Sinovac vaccine acceptable.

The survey by the University of Hong Kong, in which up to 1,000 people were polled this month, showed that general acceptance of vaccines in the Chinese special administrative region was low, with only 46% likely to take a COVID-19 vaccine.
Trust was significantly lower in the Sinovac vaccine, with 29.5% of respondents accepting it compared with 56% of people who would take one produced by Germany’s BioNTech and 35% who would take one produced by AstraZeneca Plc and Oxford University.
Hong Kong’s government has ordered 7.5 million doses of the Sinovac vaccine and said it would be the first to arrive in the Asian financial hub, in January.
But the arrival of the vaccine has since been delayed and the government said it is waiting for more clinical information.

Before the pandemic arrived in Hong Kong in January 2020, the former British colony was roiled by months of anti-government and anti-China protests driven by a perception that Beijing was pushing the semi-autonomous city onto a more authoritarian path.
“How do you repair a trust deficit? I think there’s no quick and easy way,” Professor Gabriel Leung, dean of the University of Hong Kong’s medical school, told a press briefing on the survey results, referring to the Sinovac vaccine.
“I think there is only one way, and that’s openness and really allowing science to lead.”
Hong Kong formally approved use of a Fosun Pharma-BioNTech vaccine on Monday, the first vaccine to be accepted in the city. The first batch of one million doses is expected to arrive in the second half of February.

Hong Kong has secured a total of 22.5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine from Fosun Pharma-BioNTech, Sinovac and Oxford-AstraZeneca, the city government leader Carrie Lam said in December.
Fosun Pharma is German drug manufacturer BioNTech’s partner in Greater China and is responsible for the cold-chain management, storage and distribution. The vaccines are being manufactured in Germany.
Hong Kong has largely managed to keep the coronavirus under control. It has had 10,283 cases and 174 deaths over the past year.

China's first Ad5-nCoV COVID-19 vaccine was rolled out on Friday. One of the developers of the single-dose vaccine said that the annual production capacity can reach 500 million doses, which means 500 million people can be vaccinated in a year.

Phase-I clinical trials of the vaccine started on March 16, 2020, making it the world's first COVID-19 candidate vaccine that entered clinical trials.

The Ad5-nCoV vaccine is a recombinant adenovirus vector vaccine jointly developed by CanSino Biologics and researchers from the Institute of Military Medicine under the Academy of Military Sciences led by Chen Wei.

Chen is an infectious disease expert and a researcher at the Institute of Military Medicine under the Academy of Military Sciences.

Unlike inactivated vaccines, Ad5-nCoV is effective with a single dose and can bring dual protection ̶ humoral and cellular immunity ̶ at the same time.

It is the only single-dose COVID-19 vaccine that has been given a conditional approval to be rolled out in China, state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Friday.

People can get desirable protective effect after 14 days of inoculation.

The protective effect can last at least six months after a single-dose inoculation and it can increase immune response by 10 to 20 times if the second dose is taken half a year after the first one, Chen told CCTV in an exclusive interview on Friday.

"We have data for six months so far to prove the vaccine's efficacy People don't need to take another dose within the first six months after their first inoculation. What if the epidemic is not over after six months? We have also developed the vaccine so that its effect is strengthened even after six months," Chen said.

According to data, Chen and other researchers predicted that the vaccine's effect can last two years after two doses.

The most important feature of the vaccine is that it can be produced fast and on a large scale, Chen said.

The vaccine showed full protection against severe-illness morbidity in Pakistan, Chen said, noting that it can achieve more than 90 percent protection against severe-illness.

The vaccine showed 90.98 percent efficacy rate in preventing severe diseases in its interim analysis. And it's effective in preventing 65.7 percent of symptomatic diseases in clinical trials conducted in multiple countries including Pakistan, Faisal Sultan, special assistant to the Pakistani Minister on Health, announced in early February.

Chen said no serious adverse reactions associated with the vaccine have been reported in the vaccinated population so far, including those in extreme environments. And no specific adverse events have been reported that are different from those of other vaccines.

The Ad5-nCoV vaccine is actually mature and reliable. The vaccine with such technology has already been used for Ebola virus in 2014, Chen said.

People aged under 18 and over 60 are not allowed to take the other approved vaccines without conditional approval. However, the Ad5-nCoV vaccine is different.

Ad5-nCoV's Phase-II and Phase-III trials all involved elder participants as people aged over 55 or 60 have a higher morbidity of severe illness, Chen said.

The oldest volunteer was a man surnamed Xiong whose antibody tested positive after the clinical trial results were revealed, this gave researchers great confidence, Chen noted. She also said they have safety data of clinical trials for people aged 6-18 which are being reviewed by China's National Medical Products Administration.

A PhD volunteer took the vaccine on February 29, 2020, the same day as Chen. And she had given birth to a baby one week earlier. "She and her baby are healthy now," Chen said.

Since the vaccine can be transported and stored at 2C-8C, Chen hopes that the vaccine won't require cold-chain logistics. She also said they have finished the clinical trials around the world and will soon release the results.

In China there are two types of COVID-19 vaccines ̶ inactivated and Ad5-nCoV vaccines. When asked which one people should choose, Chen said those who want to take fewer doses and get faster immune response should choose the Ad5-nCoV.

As other variants of the virus have been found in other parts of the world, Chen said they will follow the safety of the vaccine over the long term after the rollout, and they will also track its effectiveness against the new variants. She also stated that they have started to develop a vaccine against the new variants.

When asked what the level of China's vaccine research and development is in the world, Chen said, "There is no doubt we are in the first group."

"There are few other countries that can reach the level that China has reached," she noted.

"We are neither arrogant nor condescending. We also learn more from others in order to produce safer vaccines. We must have confidence in our science and technology," she remarked

this whole chinese vaccine being useless is a lie my cousin a dr working at Aga khan university hospital the top hospital in Pakistan had a shot of chinese vaccine and is fine no issues at all my mother and grand parents getting it soon!

There's a big difference between being useless and not being trusted.

Those vaccines Chinese babies took years ago were very real and did prevent illnesses...however many lots (NOT ALL) were created incorrectly due to poor quality control (and corporate greed about cutting corners to make more money) and then a huge coverup of there being an actual ongoing problem.

This led to children getting sick/dying.
THAT is what is meant by distrust of Chinese vaccines.

China doesn't like reporting failures (it causes thoughts of mistrust of the civilian "children" of the "parental" government). How often in Chinese media do you hear them say something went wrong due to some oversight?

When something does finally make headlines China acts swiftly to make the people assured it wont happen again.
Here is what happened in 2007 after a another drug scandal hit the headlines
"Zheng was sentenced to death in May for taking bribes to approve an antibiotic blamed for at least 10 deaths and other substandard medicines. Cao was given a death sentence last month with a two-year reprieve for accepting bribes and dereliction of duty."

Nobody is going to freely speak up about something being amiss unless they want severe repercussions. Unfortunately this also mushrooms into the phrase "why declare bankruptcy when I owe $100,000 when I can wait untiI I hit $1Million since the repercussions are exactly the same".

Smart on them.

Pro tip: don't buy something you plan to inject into all your population's bodies nearly simultaneously from a country that is literally planning to invade you.

Yes, and people still refuse today to buy their Baby Formula. They used to control the entire US market and now they are almost a nobody. 8% last number I saw. Market now dominated by Similac and Enfamil.
