Turkey says warplane lost off Syria | Reuters

(Reuters) - Turkey said on Friday it had lost contact with one of its military aircraft while it was over the sea off the southeastern coast, and a television station said it had crashed in Syrian territorial waters.

CNN Turk television said Turkey was in contact with the Syrian authorities to get permission to conduct a search for the airmen, although there was no immediate official confirmation.

In a statement, Turkey's military said a search and rescue operation was underway. It lost radar and radio contact with the plane after it took off from Erhac Airport in the eastern province of Malatya, which borders Syria.

Two crew were aboard the F-4 at the time of the crash, the Turkish state news agency Anatolia said, citing Malatya governor Ulvi Saran.

Pro-Iranian Al-Mayadeen television station, which is based in Lebanon, quoted what it said were Turkish sources as saying a jet had been shot down by Syrian air defenses near the border with Turkey. There was no confirmation of that report.

Turkey's military says it has lost contact with one of its aircraft over the sea close to the border with Syria.

Turkish media said the plane, an F-4 jet, crashed in Syria or Syrian territorial waters.

However, eyewitnesses in the northern Syrian town of Latakia told BBC Arabic that Syrian air defences shot down an unidentified aircraft near the town of Ras al-Baseet.

The Turkish military said a search and rescue operation was now under way.

Radio and radar contact were lost after the plane took off from an airbase in Malatya province on Friday morning, a statement from the Turkish armed forces said.

Malatya governor Ulvi Saran told the state-run Anatolia news agency there were two pilots on the aircraft.

The Hurriyet newspaper said the plane apparently plunged into international waters outside the territorial waters of Syria.

Turkish media are saying the two pilots have been rescued from international waters in the Mediterranean.

Suriye'den 'iki uça

If its real, then they crossed the line, a serious reaction should be taken, not a good timing, I was hoping that military would concentre on PKK this summer.

What was a F-4 doing in Syrian airspace ? its another question, technically they had the right intervene but its not means we should stay silent againts it.

Lets not judge quickly here, we are talking about 50 Year old planes here. We shouldnt be surprized that one suddenly vanishes. Hope the pilot is oke.

Allahu a3lem if its real but this can be another game of the west so Turkey will use article 5 of Nato.

Does Turkey operate RF-4? Maybe it was a RF-4 and was on spying mission and Syrians shot it down. Much like the Iranian RF-4 which was shot down in Oman by rebels.

Spying with a fighter jet? What kind of bullcrap is that.
