Syria: Rebel-held areas bombed as Turkey reinforces outposts
Air attacks, shelling and barrel bombs target rebel-held Idlib and Hama provinces in second day of escalation.

Antakya, Turkey -
Russian-backed Syrian government forces have pounded rebel-held areas in northwest Syria, killing at least five people in a second day of heavy bombardment, according to rescuers.

The intensified strikes on Sunday, including air attacks, shelling and helicopter-dropped barrel bombs, targeted villages in southern Idlib and northern Hama provinces.

The escalation comes amid growing fears over a seemingly imminent all-out offensive against the densely populated Idlib province, the last rebel bastion in Syria.

A baby and a young child were killed in the village of Habeit in southern Idlib in a barrel bomb attack, according to the White Helmets, a civil defence group operating in rebel-held areas.

Three others, including a rebel officer, were killed in air raids and shelling that struck the northern Hama province.

Abd al-Karim al-Rahmoun, a member of the White Helmets in northern Hama, said that about half of the local population had left the sparsely populated region to escape the bombardment.

Activists told Al Jazeera that while hundreds of people have been fleeing the attacks in northern Hama and southern Idlib provinces, there has not been a significant wave of civilians moving towards the north.

In some cases, the activists said, people would leave their villages early in the morning and return after sunset once the bombardment stopped.

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), over the past 72 hours, forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his Russian ally have hit rebel-held areas 1,060 times with air attacks, shelling and barrel bombs.

In response, al-Jabha al-Wataniya lil-Tahrir (NLF), a major armed opposition group, on Sunday shelled government forces' positions in northern Hama, SOHR reported.

Erdogan on Idlib: We won't watch from the sidelines
Meanwhile, another convoy of Turkish military vehicles crossed into Idlib province on Sunday.

Over the past 10 days, a number of similar convoys carrying weapons and armoured cars have entered northern Syria to reinforce 12 observation points manned by Turkish soldiers.

These outposts, which are located in rebel-held areas in western Aleppo, northern Hama and Idlib provinces, were established under the de-escalation agreements reached by Turkey, Iran and Russia.

"[These reinforcements are] a sign that Turkey treats the issue of Idlib very seriously and it is not going to easily turn a blind eye on any Russian, regime or Iranian military design for it," said Galip Dalay, director of research at the Istanbul-based Sharq Forum.

Dalay said Turkey would not withdraw its troops from the observation posts any time soon, unless it reached an agreement with Russia, Iran and the Syrian government.

"At this stage, I don't see a deal that exists," he said. "During this period, targeted attacks will continue ... but will not produce any big waves of refugees."

Already hosting more than three million Syrian refugees, Turkey is keen to avoid a full-fledged government offensive. Its call for a ceasefire, however, was rejected on Friday by Russia at a summit in Iran's capital, Tehran.

Speaking to reporters earlier on Sunday, Suleyman Soyli, Turkey's interior minister, warned of the possibility of mass displacement in the event of a large-scale military offensive on Idlib.

"We care about humanity and we won't give up. We will not be responsible for a migration wave in case of possible attacks [on Idlib]," Soyli said.

The northwestern province bordering Turkey is home to an estimated three million people, half of whom are internally displaced.

Soyli added that 255,300 Syrians have returned to their homes over the past two years, including 160,000 who went to the "Euphrates Shield region" in northern Aleppo province, which rebel groups and the Turkish army took over from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) in 2016.

It's definitely a good step by Turkey. The other day I tweeted to Erdo asking him to take appropriate steps to protect the civilians and democratic forces. I'm glad that his thoughts are in the same frequency. Putin and his genocidal maniac must not be given a free reign of terror.

turkey cannot fight with russia as they are nuclear power and have much advanced military than turkey .turkey is already isolated and their economy is also weak due to u.s sanction.if turkey and russia fight each other u.s and israel will be beneficiary as their both rivals become more weak

.
Are the Turks considering moving across into rebel areas to advantageous defensive positions and forms a buffer area that civilians can flee to. What was negotiated at the Tehran summit?

Turkey will simply defend the innocent civilians, if you call that 'fighting Russia' that's your opinion. It's Russia which cannot afford to fight Turkey for paving the way for a genocide. Russia is not in a great state either, economically or politically. At least in Syria Russia is more isolated than Turkey, so it will be stupidity for Russia to fight Turkey in Idlib for a bloody despot. Your talk of Russian nuclear response is nonsense, Russia knows there's no scope for such a step against Turkey specially when Iran faces the same threat from the zionazi state.

They want to face to face against Russia in battle? I think Turkey prefer "Proxy" than putting themselves into fighting against Russia.

Any Change of Proxies capturing areas that the Russians will allow them to hold? Is that what happened in Afrin (except I think that was a mix of Turkish military and their proxies).

From the News stories it looks like a slaughter is about to happen, and refugees will stream in turkey from this area.

Turkey's objective IMO is to focus on 40% of Idlib held by the Turkish supported FSO. In the worst case the refugees can be housed there. As a last resort it may be like Turkey protecting the refugees, who would otherwise cross into Turkry, EU etc., inside Idlib. Turkey is already home to 3m refugees. She can't realistically be told to 'do more'!!! This might be the possible outcome given the present circumstances!!

And, the USA-EU, hopefully, would toe the Turkish line since they're not in a better position to change the ground reality themselves. Turkey is, however, also concerned about the USA held areas working as a safe haven for PKK, YPG etc. It's a very complex situation!!! As if Allah-u Azimushshan is showing to the Muslims with Yakin how HE valued the Ottoman Empire....

Russia doesn't have forces on the ground, the Iranian mullahs and the despot's thugs are doing that part. So your fantasy will remain a fantasy but yes, if the Russians bomb the Turkish positions Turkey has the right to defend those positions with whatever means she has.

Russia won’t bomb any Turkish positions, I think Russia and Turkey are in agreement here, plus Turkey will bomb any ground forces threatening its outposts. The only way for Russia to pull Turkey out of Idlib without Turkish consent is full out war which neither country will risk, the rest ie SAA and Iranian militia are expendable.

It makes no sense anyway to talk about SAA capturing the whole of Idlib they don’t have the manpower, this is just posturing.

I have the same opinion. However, there are some fanboys on this forum who cannot comprehend this reality. They think that Russia's nuclear arsenal is for the Turkish forces in Idlib.
