In a surprising move, Switzerland is considering giving every adult citizen a guaranteed income of $2,500 a month.

The Swiss debate on the issue started in 2013, when a petition in favour of the initiative gathered over 100,000 signatures — the number needed for it to be considered for debate nationally. Now, the country is considering giving every adult citizen a guaranteed stipend of $2,500 a month and will be holding a national referendum on June 5 to determine if it would do so.

Those in work and earning less than the proposed sum would have their pay topped up whereas those out of work would be given the full amount. The income would be unconditional and untaxed, and would replace various welfare payments.

However, the Swiss government has opposed the initiative, saying it would have to find a colossal 25 billion Swiss francs a year to pay for the measure.

Proponents of the initiative claim Switzerland is a rich country that can afford it. They say that because of advances in technology, hundreds of thousands of Swiss people are at risk of losing their jobs and the introduction of a basic income would give them greater security.

Pakistan’s per capita income rises slightly to $1,561

However, opinion polls suggest only 40% of Swiss voters will back the basic income scheme.

Switzerland is not the first country to come up with the idea of basic income. Finland is considering scrapping all welfare benefits and paying everyone $10,000 a year instead. A pilot program is set to launch early next year, with roughly 10,000 Finns receiving around 550 euros a month for two years.

Corrupt Politicians, Bureaucrats, Industrialists of our country have deposited Billions of Dollars in Swiss Bank accounts.

Only God Knows WHY, Money once deposited in these banks hardly gets withdrawn

No Wonder Swiss economy is flushed with foreign reserves and there is No better way than doling out this money to their own citizens and reviving the economy.

Such things cannot work...except it would be implement worldwide. But I'm probably too optimistic when I think a global basic income would, even if not solve all, but at least a lot of problems .

Several referendums will be held in Switzerland during 2016, one of which involves the proposal to introduce a basic income.

Five propositions have been scheduled for referendum election on 5 June 2016
  1. A popular initiative for a basic income.
  2. A popular initiative for fair transport financing. According to this initiative, the revenue from the mineral oil tax will be used exclusively for road construction.
  3. A popular initiative for public service. Launched by four news and consumer rights magazines, this initiative seeks to improve public services by mandating that the government not set any profitmaking goals for public services, that any profits not fund the overall budget, and that public service directors do not earn more than the corresponding government minister.
  4. A referendum on amendments to the medically assisted reproduction law.
  5. A referendum on amendments to the federal asylum law.
The discussion about basic income in Switzerland began in the 1980s, initially amongst academics such as sociologists who saw the potential to alleviate poverty better than the current system. But there was no major public debate in the 1980s nor the 1990s. In the early 2000s, however, things were slowly changing due to a spill-over from the German debate.
Two basic income organizations were formed, "Initiative Grundeinkommen" and BIEN-Switzerland, and one Attac-group also became advocates. These organizations had some success, including some articles in national newspapers.
The petition calling for a referendum on basic income as a constitutional right was started in April 2012. After six months 42,000 people had signed, and by April 2013 there were approximately 70,000 signatures. By October 2013 more than 130,000 citizens had signed, meaning a referendum on the issue had to be held.
Publicity included a truck filled with eight million coins emptying the money in front of the Federal Palace in Bern. Even though the initiative official text submitted to the vote does not specify any level, the campaigners have proposed is 2,500 Swiss francs for adults (about 1,650 USD at PPP in 2014) and 625 francs for children per month.

Not bad if you are spared from Taxes, Appartment, health insurance costs etc. if not then you are fvcked.

4500-5000$ per month seems like minimum to be able to live as a normal human being in Switzerland, everything below is considered poor.

You mustn't get any of this because I am sure you'd spend half of it on buying cans of Heinekens while the other half would be spent on football matches ! :tsk:

The Swiss are quite stingy on who gets citizenship. Plus, they are not part of EU, so they can ignore the idiots in Brussels on how to deal with asylum seekers.
