Do buy a bb gun first (it is non lethal plastic pallet gun) and use it in your lawn/yard.

Bro the day I moved to a better neighborhood, I'd be selling that in heart beat. Not because I am worried about any family member or my wife using it on me (pun intended) but its just I don't like guns.

I met a Pakistani guy in Atlanta, works in IT/ Real estate and he was very excited to show me his gun he was carrying with a license, and he was asking me and my cousins husband to also buy it as he was talking about how BLM protests one of his Gas station got attacked and looted.

I live in country side to, but the cities (smaller) ones are not the best shape, its just I am hearing lots of shooting/break in's/or people pulling gun incidents, ...
As for rifle suggestion bro, I don't think I am ready for a rifle...I hold some pistols from my father in law's safe, they don't feel sluggish or heavy, or even hard to handle.. Yes I did not fire one but I think its something that is best for the purpose I am looking a gun for.

Your neighborhood indeed seems different from mine. Sorry to hear that. Crimes can happen anywhere, anytime but statically ours is safe region. I have subscribed to the Nextdoor.com neighborhood engagement site and from the chatter most we hear are occasional suspect end of drive ways or lurking around someone's house or some scammers showing up at houses. Most 'incidents' are about noise, such as from fireworks. And most common are sights of coyotes, wild hogs, and bears. But we feel that's going to change with people fleeing the Blue States more and more. Dang Yankees! <joking>.
To me a rifle reduces chances of accidental use by family members while a gun would be easier. Also, our poor rifle can barely kill a rabbit let alone a person. But it does look threatening and makes good shot sounds! Sort of like those gentle big dogs who look scary but are really docile.

So guys, Firsts of all I am against guns, specially Automatic rifles but recently the city I am working had a shooting that result in one dead and couple injured, my Wife has been trying to get my birthday present so I thought maybe I should buy a Pistol and take classes to how to safely handle a gun? The thing is that I have no idea about guns except that Pistols or handguns usually take 9mm bullets. I don't want to build an arsenal or automatic guns, I just want to get my fear of guns out of me because here you need a gun to protect yourself from muggers, gangs or druggies. My wife think its necessary that one of us know how to handle a gun maturely and my wife don't want it so that has to be me, I just want to know if this would be a good idea and if yes, then Which gun I should go for ? Please don't suggest Automatic rifles, shotguns or hunting rifles , Ak's or snipers , I am only looking for a handgun.

A Glock 45 for stopping power, reliability and ease of use bro.

You'd be surprised how much bad guys can absorb.

Or if you want to start light and get used to the workings of a firearm which again is superb for a beginner I'd say the Glock 19.

The two military calibres for pistols are .45 and 9mm. Both of these are man stoppers but not always lethal, which is no bad thing. The one advantage is because of mass production of these calibres they are relatively cheap, so a lot of practice would be affordable.

The .45 has a high recoil, the 9mm would be easier to operate. Never keep the gun loaded, keep the gun and magazine seperate but nearby. Children have a habit of getting everywhere.

Isn't it great that instead of Cambridge using Taxpayer's money on some worthless endeavor (like helping some homeless person from freezing to death in some back alley by actually doing something to get them off the street)..it was put to a more righteous use on that "poverty" stricken dad on the brink of having his son miss out on playing hockey.

Oh wait Cambridge is helping their homeless not freeze in back alleys

This is a problem I see over and over. People's definition of "poor" and "desperate" are really out of whack. Most people are just too soft and don't even know what poor is.

I bet he'll be the next guy in the ICU after not wearing a mask at his son's hockey practice at the local indoor ice rink.

One of my card-carrying Democrat friend around the Obama 2008 victory told me something like: 'The govt programs and benefits are for the poor people to not commit crimes.' (Basically not much to do with altruism).
PS. I have see about every 4th or 5th person in America trying to be on 'Disability' payment if not already on some kind of govt. assistance. America is far more 'socialist' then people might know.

In your situation, I would suggest a short barrel revolver. Revolvers are very simple and reliable tools, they almost never jam like a handgun sometimes does. A short barrel would also allow for easy concealment. That should be sufficient for your self protection needs.
