Iran to Set up 1,000-MW Power Plant to Export Electricity to Pakistan

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran is planning to set up a gas-based power plant with a power-generation capacity of 1,000-MW near the southeastern city of Zahedan to export electricity to Pakistan.

The project will serve as an additional source of imported power for Pakistan, which entered into an agreement with Iran in August 2008 to import 1,000-MW to address the power deficit of 4,000-MW in the country.

As part of the recently proposed project, an Iranian firm will lay a transmission line between Iran and Pakistan before the power plant is commissioned.

The transmission line will cover a distance of 50-km on the Iranian side and 70-km on the Pakistani side.

Delegates from Iran and Pakistan met earlier this month at Islamabad to explore opportunities for Iranian investment in Pakistan's power sector and to assess the progress of ongoing projects.

At an earlier meeting in August 2008, Pakistan entered into a memorandum of understanding with Iran to import 100-MW of power for Gwadar Port and 1,000-MW of power for other regions in the country.

The two nations decided to expedite the laying of transmission lines for the requisite import of power to the Gwadar Port region. A transmission network for supplying 100-MW of power between Zahedan in southeast Iran and Quetta in southwest Pakistan is expected to be set up by the end of 2009.

Projects in Pakistan that are currently in need of investment include hydropower projects with an aggregate power generation capacity of 16,000-MW, requiring an investment of $26 billion by 2025. Coal-based power stations with an aggregate capacity of 6,000-MW that are scheduled to be commissioned by 2015 require an investment of $7 billion.

The country is also estimated to require an additional investment of $4.7 billion for alternate energy power projects that have an aggregate generation capacity of 1,000-MW and are slated to go on stream by 2015, the reinforcement of existing transmission and distribution (T&D) systems, and the development of additional T&D networks for distribution of power from upcoming power plants.

Other ongoing projects between the two nations include a 50-MW windfarm in Pakistan being developed jointly by Sunir Company (Tehran, Iran), a water and power equipment and services export firm, and Planet Energy Private Limited (Islamabad, Pakistan). M/S Farab (Tehran, Iran), a turnkey contractor and equipment supplier of hydroelectric power projects, is setting up a 130-MW hydropower plant as an independent power project at Sehra in Sindh.

Korean investors offer to set up 1000MW power plant in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani held a meeting with a consortium of Korean Investors comprising on Major Power generation companies namely Bin Daen, KEPCO, DOOSAN, PEDCO and DEOLITE, who offers to set up 1000MW power plant in Pakistan.

The visiting delegation informed the Premier they are deeply interested in setting up 1000MW power plant each at Sonda and Thar and gradually to increase them to 3000 MW in 5-years period.

They are also apprised the Prime Minister that they would make this investment based on 100% equity with no borrowing from banks or financial institutions and the members of delegation also intended to meet the chief Minister of Sindh in the coming days.

Prime Minister also informed the delegation that Pakistan’s coal deposits exceeds 180 billion tons and the Government is taking concrete steps to exploit them at fast pace in order to meet the growing energy needs of the country, as the Government is laying great emphasis on the speedy development of power sector.

The Premier also thanked the delegation for showing keen interest in making investment in Pakistan’s power sector and assured them of the Government’s full support and assistance in this regard.

Wouldn't it be cheaper in the long term to have one setup in Pakistan?

In the short term perhaps we can buy Iran's surplus power just like that.

.
The only problem is Iran is asking too Much for Gas and Electricity.

We need our own Power Plants.

.
Why Pakistan is Not putting more Emphasis on Solar and wind Power for producing Electricity.

There are some many points on Indus river where you can put an electric generator of 10 MWs.

And what about the Nuclear power Generation where are the Chinese Nuclear reactors, do they exist on the papers only. I mean there is no more news on this topic, is it still on ?

These and the Khalifa point refinery - get the projects moving no matter what it takes damn it.

Is there any help from China? China and Pakistan recently signed nuclear deal for power generation similar to India-US?

That likely won't be online for a while IMO, and not until the two countries get a sense of what the US, and hence the NSG reaction, to such a deal would be.

If only 'political statements' from the aforementioned entities, then it will likely go ahead, but even then the NPP's are a bit more long term due to the technological aspects I believe.

The dams (proposals of dams totaling upto 10,000 MW up for feasibility studies right now) are another important avenue that is labor intensive and has massive downstream impact in terms of agriculture (irrigation, increase in crop production, farmer benefits, labor employment etc.) as well as power.

The WB/IMF/ADB and friends of Pakistan have indicated interest in financially supporting these projects, and coupled with a possible 1.5 billion/year in US aid directed towards education, health and the social sector, if spent wisely, this could all add up to a massive boost for the economy, infrastructure and development.

You're right pak should have their own plants and pakistan has alot of coal it is estimated that the current coal reserves can give 20000 mw of electricity for 20 years so the best choice would be a coal power plant.:flame:

20000 MW !!!! That is a lot of energy I doubt pakistan domestic, industry is that big to consume extra 20000 MW of energy...

Yes that's right but coal is gonna be cheap and the government should replace oil power plants with coal plants. It'll be vry cheap compared to the cost of the oil that is exported since the coal is present in pakistan.

.
Pakistan has Third Largest Reserves of Coal in the World

Coal Quality is LOW because of too much sulpher in it .

& abt the above 20000 MW

only 2% of coal can generate 20000 MW for 20 Years :D

.
Pakistan is blessed with so many natural resources.
Why ask a country like Iran which really cant be trusted.
