So i came across this article from The Nation.

https://nation.com.pk/18-Aug-2016/the-regularization-of-katchi-abaadis-pakistan-s-need-of-the-hour

Couple the above article with the governments anti-encroachment drive, i started thinking what would be a good solution. What can be done, so that the people have a place to live and the area doesn't look like a eyesore either. Something that would be cheap, easy to build & maintain and hopefully environmentally friendly. Searching the web and i came across multiple solutions, from using recycled plastic bricks to using homes made of MDF. But then i came across a video and thought this might be the perfect solution.

Imagine if these

These are Expanded polystyrene dome houses, a Japanese innovation. They are cheap and quick to build and are also environmentally friendly.

So the solution would be to allocate land for all the katchi abbadis, build the infrastructure like roads, sanitation and underground utilities (electric, gas, etc) and then build these dome houses and then allocate one to each family. After this ban the creation of all katchi abadis and encroachments.

What do you guys think? if you have an alternate solution please share.

There are plenty of easy homes/ cheap homes these days and blueprints are on the web so you dont necessarily even need much money in terms of design! But the prob is Pakistani weather....rain and sun!

From what i have read as they are based on polystyrene they are good insulators and can even withstand snow and earthquakes. you can also apply a uv resistant paint for extra protection.

I dont think it is very cheap...we can learn from history or from nature as West does:

Here is a scientific study of houses in Africa (cheap)

Great that your thinking about the basic problems that afflict millions in Pakistan. For them it matter whit what Trump, Putin, Modi or Syrians are doing. But I actually don't like the ugly shaped things and they look so unnatural. Potential enviromental hazard of future? I can't see what is wrong with using the simple breezing block or the one with cavity so it acts as good insulator.

Hey mate, the problem with these ones that it still needs timber, unfortunately timber is expensive and not environmentally friendly.

I actually like the look of them, they are simple yet different. They actually look like mini masjids without the minarets :-)

There are 2 things you need to consider:

1) Design - Should be simple to build and be economical to run like airy/ use of natural light/ resistant to winds and harsh sun
2) Material - Should be cheap, easy to find and handle and tolerate climate

cheapest design can be chosen and cheap material can replace whatever was used...

.
another thing i found is that on the top of these dome is a small glass dome, it provides all the natural light during the day time which will reduce the need to turn on the lights saving on electricity.

Yes many eco friendly houses have something like a sun roof to maximize use of sunlight and minimize dependence on electricity

a while back i saw a video from Bangladesh, where they were using plastic water bottles filled with some solution to light up the tiny houses of their slums. I will see if i can find it and then share it.

Japanese, eh?

I could have guessed.

They look like the houses in Dragonball Z.
