After wrapping up her weeklong China tour, now the former Prime Minister and leader of the opposition in Bangladesh, Begum Khaleda Zia is preparing for her upcoming India visit. Traditionally though, Bangladesh Nationalist Party [BNP] is seen as anti-Indian, while many even believe the party to have been greatly inclined towards Pakistan, in recent years, BNP has given clear signal of its lesser interest in Pakistan, which already is a failed state and Begum Khaleda Zia had been searching for new allies within the region, while has also rightly put emphasis in strengthening their relations with China. During her China tour, Begum Khaleda Zia sought Beijing's assistance in a number of economic projects in Bangladesh, including the second Padma Bridge, although the implementation of the first Padma Bridge is still hanging between certainty and uncertainty due to wrong policies of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League. Begum Khaleda Zia surely took up the issue of implementation of second Padma Bridge under Chinese assistance, sensing the first Padma Bridge has already turned into 'mission impossible' due to several wrongdoings and wrong policies of the ruling party. Most importantly, the Chinese side has also expressed willingness in financing the second Padma Bridge, which surely is a clear sign of Chinese refreshed willingness of extending further economic assistance to Bangladesh. It may be mentioned here that, China in the past had extended financial assistance to a number of development and infrastructural projects in Bangladesh, both during the tenure of General Hussain Muhammed Ershad and Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Following the China visit of Begum Khaleda Zia, a high-powered delegation from China led by Li Changchun, member of the standing committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China [CPC] Central Committee visited Bangladesh and signed three instruments to boost cooperation in economic, power and financial assistance.
Bangladeshi government has offered allocating land for establishment of exclusive Chinese Economic Zone if Chinese government decides of relocating some of the existing industrial projects to Bangladesh. The Chinese delegation included Minister for International Department of CPC central Committee, Wang Jia Rui, Education Minister Yuan Gui Ren, Cultural Affairs Minister Chai Wu, Minister for State Administration of Radio, Film and Television Chai Fu Chao, Minister for General Administration of Press and Publication Liu Bin Jie and Vice Minister of Commerce Jiang Zeng Wei.
The visit of the Chinese delegation under the leadership of Li Chuang Chun has clearly left a strong message to Bangladesh about Beijing's sincerest attitude of extending all possible cooperation to Dhaka as well as pushing the existing relations between Bangladesh and China towards further height. It may be mentioned here that, China, being one of the biggest economic power in the world has huge potentials of becoming a stable economic and development partner of Bangladesh once the Bangladeshi leadership are sincere in giving new momentum to the existing bilateral relations between Dhaka and Beijing.
Later during the meeting between Li Changchun and BNP leader Begum Khaleda Zia, the Chinese leader assured of their continued support to Bangladesh in its economical and infrastructural development. Khaleda Zia and the Chinese delegation elaborately discussed how the existing relations between China and Bangladesh, the peoples of the two friendly nations and the BNP-CPC relations can be strengthened further. The BNP chief mainly focused on four issued constructing a deep seaport at Sonadia, the second Padma Bridge, introducing an integrated communication system in the country and establishing road and rail way links between Chittagong and Kunming. These issues were also discussed during Khaleda Zia's just-concluded China visit with a positive response from the Chinese side.
Now the Bangladeshi former Prime Minister is getting set for her upcoming week-long India tour, which shall begin on October 28, 2012. It is already indicated from the New Delhi that the visit of the former Bangladeshi Prime Minister is being seen very positively by the Indian policymakers and there will be several important meetings between Begum Khaleda Zia and a number of important political figures in India, including Sonia Gandhi. The former Bangladeshi PM will also get extensive media coverage, while she will be interviewed by a number of Indian newspapers and television channels. Most importantly, the Indian media will try to understand policy of Khaleda Zia's party towards combating Indian insurgency groups, which had been operating from Bangladesh as well as various militancy groups within India, including those at Jammu and Kashmir, if Bangladesh Nationalist Party comes in power. It will be crucial for Begum Khaleda Zia in convincing her Indian counterpart about her party's sincerity and commitment in not allowing anti-Indian insurgency groups in using Bangladeshi soil in continuing their activities. It will also be important for Bangladesh Nationalist Party is exhibiting honesty in building relations with India on the basis of mutual trust, while abandoning BNP's previous anti-India policies. Under the current global geo-political context, it is important for Bangladesh and India in continuing mutually beneficial and respectable relations based on sincerity and trust. At the same time, Indian policymakers must do everything in resolving existing issues with Bangladesh, including the water sharing issue with sincerity so that people of Bangladesh won't consider India as a hostile neighbour.
