Sixth 3-star Gen retires this year
By: Sikander Shaheen | November 25, 2012
ISLAMABAD - This year’s scheduled retirement cycle for military’s three-star generals would complete next week following the retirement of a corps commander, the sixth and the last lieutenant general, to retire this year.

Multan Corps Commander Lt-Gen Shafqaat Ahmed is reaching the age of superannuation, reportedly on coming Friday (November 30). Lt-Gen Abid Pervaiz, who is presently the chief of Logistic Staff at General Headquarters (GHQ), would replace him, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Saturday.

Previously, the military’s top brass is said to have contemplated on appointing Lt-Gen Arshad Waheed, the Chief of General Staff (CGS), as Multan Corps Commander.
Arshad, who was regarded as a potential contender for further elevation to four-star general rank, heads second-tier command at the GHQ that directly oversees border coordination initiatives jointly undertaken by Pakistan Army, Afghan National Army (ANA) and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

Requesting anonymity, an army brigadier said that Lt-Gen Arshad had not been assigned the said field positing because he wanted to continue with the staff appointment till his retirement in January next year. “General Arshad wants to stay at GHQ because of his engagements concerning border security scenario passing through a crucial phase,” the brigadier said.

Ahead of the signing of an important document on border coordination mechanism by military chiefs from Pakistan, Afghanistan and ISAF in Kabul on Tuesday, Lt-Gen Arshad had met ISAF Deputy Commander Lt-Gen Nick Carter to discuss border coordination mechanism at the GHQ last week, officials said.

In case Lt-Gen Arshad had accepted a field posting, Lt-Gen Nasir Janjua, the incumbent National Defence University (NDU) president was likely to replace him at the GHQ as CGS. Janjua had served as Vice CGS (VCGS) before becoming the NDU president.

In addition, five lieutenant generals that have retired from service this year are: Ahmed Shuja Pasha, Tanvir Tahir, Sardar Mehmood Ali, Agha Muhammad Umer Farooq and Ayaz Saleem Rana. Lt-Gen (r) Pasha, the former director general of Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), had retired on March 18 this year.

The military was mulling over getting him appointed as Strategic Plans Division (SPD) DG to replace Lt-Gen (r) Khalid Kidwai, reportedly. Kidwai was to get chairmanship of National Engineering and Scientific Commission (NESCOM). However, according to military sources, the move was shelved because Pasha wanted to keep a low-profile against the backdrop of several controversies that followed during his tenure as the spymaster.

Lt-Gen (r) Pasha later accepted a posting as a Member at Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC), an appointment regarded as far lesser lucrative compared to DG SPD. Irfan Burney, the NESCOM chairman, was to reportedly get the portfolio of Presidential Advisor on Defence if Lt-Gen (r) Pasha was to take over as SPD chief.

Lt-Gen (r) Tanvir Tahir had also retired in March when he was Inspector General Training and Evaluation (T&E). Sardar Mehmood Ali reached the age of superannuation as deputy chairman at Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA) in April. In July, the then NDU President Agha Muhammad Umer Farooq stood retired while Ayaz Saleem Rana, chairman of Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT), met retirement from service from service in October.

In September this year, the military command had swapped the postings of two Lt-Generals with the appointment of Muzammil Hussain as Gujranwala Corps Commander to replace Raheel Sharif posted out as T&E IG. Lt-Gen Muzammil was previously performing duties as T&E IG.

I can, with very much assurance, say that this part is absolute BS.

Everybody knows that this is not the reason why Lt Gen Arshad wasn't made Corp Commander of 2 corps, and every body also knows who was behind getting Lt Gen Abid into the Corp Commander post.

I am not saying that one was the better choice and other not, but simply that alot of nepotism and favoritism went into this little shuffle, favoritism by the top most gents in GHQ.

the above article says that he is to retire next year and if that is true than he could not have been appointed corps commander multan as he just had a few month left in his service.
on top of that the multan corps is our strike corps and hence the position is very important.

Nothing more than a cozy game of musical chairs amongst "gentlemen" of an exclusive club. Nothing to see here, move on please. :D

Gen. Kayani & Gen. Khalid are also near retirement & I think this is good, a General will come from a lower rank & we already know that low rank officers are so pissed on what the corrupt politicians are doing to Pakistan.

Pissed off or not, they must follow and uphold the Constitution and its limits imposed upon them.

Lt. General Arshad Waheed is to COAS what Lt. General Pervaiz Kayani was to Pervaiz Musharraf!

He is the blue eyed boy of the present COAS and earmarked to be the next Army Chief on Kayani's departure. He will also ensure that under his regime no impending cases or litigation are initiated against Kayani after he forgoes the office.

Really? Is it up to the serving COAS to provide immunity from legal prosecution to the prior COAS after retirement? On what authority? Or is this just another example of the Army leadership considering itself above the law?

Please clarify your comment. Thanks.

Wait a minute, isn't Lt Gen Abid Pervez the blue eyed boy?

Actually according to wiki, there are many 3-star generals still in store(22). These are scheduled retirements. So nothing is changing here.

Nice & unbeatable source. Good luck with that source in the future.

Pissed off or not, they must follow and uphold the Constitution and its limits imposed upon them.

Enjoy your stay in the US. If politicians are enemies of Pakistan then they will pay even if it's your god dam CJ Ifti. He is also with these corrupt politicians & fooling the people of Pakistan.
