What's new

Six Turkish Companies Offer Joint Tablet for Schools

Arcelik,Casper and Exper : They only have assembly lines for imported computer parts, they manufacture nothing as I know.Anyone can do what they do even at home, just take parts and set up a computer just like a lego game then label with own brand. What they do can be named as service sector, computer shops and technical support all over Turkey.

Netas, Aselsan : They are strong in R&D, they make electronics designs etc. but as far as I know no experience in computers. Both started as state initiatives for defence industry.

Vestel : Founded in 1984 by Asil Nadir (Turkish Cypriot). ZORLU Group acquired Vestel in 1994 and with agressive strategies and investment in R&D Vestel came in a very good position. Vestel is the first Turkish company that acquired a R&D company in Silicon Valley in 1997. So they have some experience in computers and some R&D.

If you ask me Vestel is the most promising one, because its owner Mr.Zorlu is an ambitious industrialist who can take more risks unlike KOC family.
We will see what will happen.

Vestel, Aselsan, Beko = Arcelik, Netas are investing in great R&D. As far as I know Vestel is the sole Computer mainboard production institute of Europe...

Thank you for the video, this is why I see Vestel the most promising one in this initiative.

True Arcelik invests a lot in R&D but on Households (oven, fridge etc.) not Computers. As i said before if you buy an Arcelik brand notebook or desktop computer you will see that nothing is manufactured by Arcelik only assembly.

In other words, turkish firms do not develop computer chips, motherboards, graphic cards, CPU etc. Household is not unimportant, but the real revenue is in computers and TVs. Considering that almost everyone in Europe owns a laptop and TV, and remember the lifespan of such devices are very short.

Sadly we still don't have high tech producing companies in Turkey. And that is partly because the level of our education (universities etc) are not competetive enough (in top 500 universities only 2-3 are Turkish). I know that this is general speaking, but we HAVE to elevate our education. Turkey must attract foreign students, and Turkey must be a prestigious country to study in. The most clever minds shouldn't travel abroad to study, but remain in Turkey to be beneficial for Turkey. Of course one can study in top universities in USA/EU, but one should return and teach those learnings in Turkey. In other words, we should not forget our nation just because life standard and jobs/education is better in EU/USA.

I visited ARDIC's website and if I am not wrong they ara a software company that developes Linux based operating systems and software solutions for mobile devices which is something and must be supported, but for the hardware which is a "thing" Turkey must have a "State Strategy" and this 15 million tablet computers program for students is a very big oppurtunity for making a good start .

I agree with a lot of your point of views guys, it is very frustrating that some of the big companies in Turkey didn't just do what Lenovo did, BUY A FRICKING T-series and continue developing it!, I had an IBM T-40 (have a T-400 now + others) but the service and software support and such on that laptop was provided by lenove, anyone who owns a lenovo kn,ows that it's a pretty nice machine.

There is no point re-inventing the wheel, buy the knowledge and production knowledge and get started!

Cars are not that important if you have an infrastructure that provides you with enough comfortable transportation, however like you guys pointed out laptops, computers, IT, TV etc. are the future. So the tablets prohect better be a damn success, if necessary buy the ficking knowledge and even buy a production factory!
