It is not just Afghanistan. Afghanistan is a way, anyone can come through it you know. So border has to been seen on permanent basis.

"Working with Afghanistan" is a loaded term and it needs both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Afghanistanis too have to accept that they need to have long term view of Pakistan as a partner.

And its more feasible to build security infrastructure on Durand than having bomb blasts in kpk and rest of Pakistan bcz that hurts even more as it directly destroys civilian infrastructure and economy. We have to work with the neighbors we have, not the neighbors we wish we had. Besides, Afghans will pursue their own international relationships as they see fit, including with India. Pakistan's sulking won't mean much to them, or to anyone else, for that matter. What will matter is how well Pakistanis are able to convince the Afghan how their interests coincide and what can be mutually beneficial as they explore other options.

It is not my logic, but the economy that will determine what Pakistan can afford or not, and in what order of priorities. South Korea was protected by Uncle Sam as they worked hard to get their economy off the ground. Pakistan had the same chance in th 50s and 60s and we blew it. Now it is a different world altogether geopolitically.

Getting rid of the miscreants is only the start. Extending the writ of the government and incorporating the tribal areas under the same legal and administrative cover would be the next steps, and it is not assured that they would be forthcoming anytime soon.

Are you sure that the will to stop smuggling and drug trade is there? The multiple billions generated go a lot way in buying influence going up to the highest corridors of power in Pakistan.

Pakistan needs to finish Zarb-e-azab than do one of the following:

1. Electrical fence, or
2. Five mile buffer filled with mines

This way Afghanistan can stop accusing us of sending people to their side for attacks and vice versa.
