WASHINGTON: Under Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Pakistan is moving away from terrorism, says a key US senator.

Senator Tim Kaine, who is a member of two powerful Senate committees on foreign relations and armed service, told reporters over the weekend that the directional change came after the 2013 general elections, which brought a new democratic set-up in the country.

Senator Kaine, a top Democrat, met the prime minister last week, when he visited the US Congress and met members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“War against terrorism, continued presence of terrorist safe havens was one of the major topics of discussion with the visiting Pakistani leader,” Senator Kaine said at a meeting with Defence Writers Group in Washington.

“My sense is that Pakistan is now really going after enclaves of terrorists in North Waziristan and other areas. They are sincerely doing it,” he said.

“Those organisations are feeling tough pressure. They are fighting back on the Pakistani government because they are feeling that the Pakistani government is cracking down on them,” he added.

Senator Kaine, however, said that former Pakistani military ruler Pervez Musharraf’s recent claims about his country’s links with militant groups were not surprising.

“I am not surprised to hear him say that in the past that was the case. I think that the evidence about ties between some aspects of the Pakistani government with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in connection with the attack in Mumbai in 2008 is pretty hard to deny,” he claimed.

“When you get into the intel and explore, you get the questions how high the ties were and how officially they were sanctioned.

But there were definitely ties,” said Mr Kaine who visited the 26/11 terrorist attack sites in Mumbai last October.

“The connection between those attackers and at least some elements in the Pakistani government, I do not think they can be credibly denied.’

Seems General Raheel has been successful in getting the very political ownership for all of military activities poised at cutting the root of terrorism. Gen Kiyani spent all his 6 years in pursuit of this but went on empty handed.

Most Pakistani posters went with just the headline. The highlighted stuff is pretty damning. A serving U.S. Senator is saying that the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai had a level of Pakistani state complicity.

He's giving credit to the wrong Sharif.

Oh he is dead on my dear. These aren't Pakistani senators. These are US senators and have more than one way to validate a claim. Mushy's statements now, connect to these law makers statements directly from 2004-2007, when they said Mushy was double crossing the US. So they know.

What do you think made the Chinese invest $ 46 billion and the Russians about $ 5 billion (starting from two?). RS wasn't on his seat when these things were taking place. It was ALL NS and his team's commitments to the investors and a resolve to erode the terrorism mess, as NS needs a stable country to bring about $ 50 more billions of investments, as soon as the power issue gets resolved.'

In simple English, a good time for Pakistani nation is coming, starting in the next two-three years, the nation will start to be more prosperous, educated and economically strong. Plus with NS meeting the US law makers, a lot of anxiety about Pakistan is gone, resulting in more defense related deals coming and soon to be followed is billions of investments into the Pakistani market!!!

So yea, he for sure had the right Sharif. RS gave IK a shut up call; as NS needed to focus on the US trip, and told him to try his luck in 2018 elections!!!

NS and RS work very well together, and are a GREAT and sincere combo for Pakistan  :enjoy:

Gen. Raheel is ONLY successful due to the Civilian Government being all supportive, and behind him. Wars aren't a charity work. They require billions and a full political system supporting and backing up the military, internally and globally.

No one is a superman to go take out all terrorists without expensive weapons, food and protective gear, which all cost a lot of money that the Civilian government has to produce somehow, without stopping the country's growth!! That is A LOT of strategy and hard work. Great to see the Civilian and the Military leadership working hand in hand for Pakistan!!

Always remember "Wars are an extension of the Civilian rule", this quote is mentioned in the US and all other Western military training. A military by it self is nothing as it can't run politics, economy and all. See a live example of this in Pakistan for over 60 years of military rule. Nothing got done for the people, or to grow the country independently. This isn't an anti-Pak military statement, its just a fact, similar to a Boxer without training or education trying to become an economist. When all you know is to punch, everything will look at you as an adversary, so don't know how to talk or negotiate, you just know how to punch. That mentality won't help your country and her economy as you require diplomatic skills and negotiation power for it.

Your entitled to your opinion but i couldnt disagree more. both NS and IK were quite willing to cut deals with the terrorists till Raheel Sharif came along and gave em both a kick up the ***. Yes the government is providing funding but they cant really say no to the Army on national security issues, thats why the Army is practically running foreign policy because something that important cant be entrusted to the sharifs business interests.

.....and there is no racism in America!
.....we have no hand in growth of Taliban, ISIS

Come on! While you are at it... claim above points also!!

Accusation started right after attack

"After the 2008 Mumbai attacks, PAF was put on high alert. It deployed to all its wartime locations and started combat air patrols. The speed and intensity of the deployment and PAF's readiness took the Indian Army High Command by surprise and later reports suggest was the main factor in the Indian decision of not going for cross border raids inside Pakistan."

Its been 7 years now and Pakistan is now in much better position.

Who gives a shyte. He is accusing Pakistan for Mumbai terrorism while also giving handjob to Pakistan.

Stay classy America.

Spiritual father of NS pushed Pakistan to terrorist hell with the help of USA - Americans commended. At that time it was Americans wish for Pakistan to play terror.

Now son is moving Pakistan away from terrorism - USA commended. Now it is American wish to do so.

TO PAKISTANIS...What we are, American instruments? Can't we live on principles on which we created Pakistan?

Sir thats exactly what i was pointing at. And thats a good sign that both civil-military leaders are on one page on this issue, may be for the first time ever in the history of Pakistan.
