BEIJING: China's famed Shaolin Temple has set up over 40 companies overseas as it hopes to spread Buddhist-inspired martial arts around the globe, state press reported on Monday.

But the announcement of a vast business plan to send the temple's famed warrior monks abroad has been met with criticism over the commercialisation of Buddhism, the Global Times said.

"We currently operate over 40 companies in cities across the world, such as Berlin and London," the paper quoted Shi Yongxin, the temple's abbot, as saying at a Beijing culture forum.

"The Shaolin Temple is also participating in the operation of some other companies related to the same industry," he said, adding that the companies have bought land and property overseas.

Shi, the first Chinese monk to earn a master's degree in business administration, denied the businesses were profit-motivated.

The temple, which was established in 495 AD, is known as the birthplace of Zen Buddhism and Chinese kung fu.

Shaolin warrior monks have held legendary status for centuries throughout Asia, while over the last 50 years films and television have spread their reputation worldwide. Besides teaching martial arts around the world, the Shaolin centres also include Zen meditation workshops and Chinese language training, Shi said.

The temple has nearly 130 martial arts clubs in the United States alone, while Shaolin monks are already capable of teaching in English, German and Spanish, he said.

Shi, known as the "CEO of Shaolin" since taking over the temple a decade ago, has developed commercial ventures such as kung fu shows, film production and online merchandise sales.

Last year Shi denied that the temple planned to participate in an IPO with a Hong Kong travel company, while a Beijing court turned down an application to put a Shaolin trademark on consumer goods like instant
noodles.

I think the Chinese are officially an athiest state. In recent decades, there has been a significant decrease in Buddhists relative to Daoists and Christians there.

Oh well it will also help spreading chinese culture of which even neighbors dont know much about.

Was only joking. The Shaolin brand has long been commercialized. They have 20,000 pupils and scores of Kungfu movies get made near the school.

Oh well religon should never be mixed with state it often ends up in problem in globalized world creating mistrust with other nations and also within the country for the minorities.

People see Shaolin as more related to the Chinese history then with Buddhism.

PS: The lady in my Avatar is the Buddhist monk from India.

I once watched a discovery channel show on the shaolin temple, man i truly loved it, their kung fu moves are awesome.

the popular spiritul wisdom today is still “儒、释、道” Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism

Actually the language which we speak is Hindi in Northern India which in itself is derivative of Sanskrit which in itself forms a compulsory part of education in norther India. The scripts which we use is still the same Devanagri which is script for Sanskrit. At the same time all the religious ceremonies have all recitations in Sanskrit while praying as well as for ceremonial purposes

Though you are correct to the extent that people dont actually understand the meaning of those recitations owing to the grammer.

Sanskrit is a very complex and delicate language

Chinese and some german top scholars are trying to decode it

could use some help from india maybe

Sanskrit is said to the language which is said to have the complete grammer. Though grammatically its not that complex but the pronounciation is really a tougue twister with very very long words like german. It is said that sanskrit is the most perfect language for the computer systems.
