Its pretty clear that the Mi17 was shot down by 'friendly fire'. I suspect the guilty officer in charge has made the black box disappear because he fears its contents would result in his court martial. This of course is pure speculation.

You think the IAF is not aware that he can talk post his retirement and embarrass them if they are caught lying. ?

But you can wait for the GoI to accept the recommendation for a Vir chakra for him. If that happens, the govt. will publish the reason for giving him the bravery award and it will certainly contain the truth.

After all such awards are only given after due diligence.
