Pakistani Taliban confirm killing of key commander Asmatullah Shaheen

ISLAMABAD, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Taliban on Tuesday confirmed the killing of their senior commander Asmatullah Shaheen and claimed that an alternate campaign to U.S. drone attacks has been launched to eliminate Taliban leaders.

Shaheen, who had also served as the Taliban interim chief after the killing of Hakimullah Mehsud in a U.S. drone strike in November, was shot dead along with three others in North Waziristan on Monday.

"Asmatullah Shaheen Bhittani was killed at Dargah Mandi in North Waziristan yesterday," the Taliban spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack near the Afghan border.

"Shaheen's death is a great loss for the Taliban movement and the huge vacuum will be difficult to fill," the TTP spokesman said in a statement.

Asmatullah’s killing: TTP blames Pakistan, American agencies

ISLAMABAD: The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on Tuesday confirmed the killing of its senior commander Asmatullah Shaheen and claimed that Pakistani and American agencies have “launched a campaign to eliminate Taliban leaders”.
“Asmatullah’s martyrdom is a great loss for the Taliban movement and the huge vacuum [created by his death] will be difficult to fill,” TTP spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said in a statement.

He alleged that “Pakistani agencies are behind the incident as they want to subject the Taliban movement to a huge loss”. However, he added that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan was aware of the ‘tactics of the enemy’.

The Taliban spokesperson, Shahidullah Shahid, claimed that the Pakistani and American agencies have launched an alternate programme to drone strikes. Published in The Express Tribune, February 26th, 2014.
