Taliban leader's death suggests Pakistan Army active in North Waziristan

Farhan Bokhari, Islamabad - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
25 February 2014

The killing of a senior Taliban commander in Pakistan's North Waziristan region on 24 February has prompted speculation that the Pakistan Army has made deeper inroads into the region than previously realised.

Neither the army nor civilian government officials in Pakistan accepted responsibility for the death of Asmatullah Shaheen, a leading Taliban commander. However, a Pakistani intelligence official told IHS Jane's : "This hit was not amateur. It was done with a great deal of precision. I don't think this could have been done by anyone other than a solid team, like a military trained team". :azn: :sniper:

Shaheen was on the Pakistan Army's most wanted list of Taliban commanders and had a USD120,000 bounty on his head since 2009.

Asmatullah’s killing: TTP blames Pakistan, American agencies
By Tahir Khan
Published: February 26, 2014
ISLAMABAD: The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on Tuesday confirmed the killing of its senior commander Asmatullah Shaheen and claimed that Pakistani and American agencies have “launched a campaign to eliminate Taliban leaders”.
“Asmatullah’s martyrdom is a great loss for the Taliban movement and the huge vacuum [created by his death] will be difficult to fill,” TTP spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said in a statement.

He alleged that “Pakistani agencies are behind the incident as they want to subject the Taliban movement to a huge loss”. However, he added that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan was aware of the ‘tactics of the enemy’.

The Taliban spokesperson, Shahidullah Shahid, claimed that the Pakistani and American agencies have launched an alternate programme to drone strikes. Published in The Express Tribune, February 26th, 2014.

I was wondering when they would find a venue to somehow relate the United States to his death, even though the investigation has not been completed. Is our name being thrown around to get public support of some sort? Was not this TTP commander responsible for the kidnapping of 15 Frontier Corps security force personnel when in December 2011 his men kidnapped and then later killed many of those detainees in? They keep kidnapping and killing civilians and soldiers and yet have the audacity to point fingers and play the blame game. We support all the efforts of the Pakistani government and military in restoring peace and stability in their homeland, whether it is to hold peace talks or conduct military action.
