Security concerns: Navy battleships moved away from Karachi

It was shelved as far as i know, when kayani came , he immediately ordered the project to be ceased. Lack of funds, and there was no real need for it. Also there was a security concern that the Naval HQ, Air HQ an GHQ all in the same place. If God forbid anything happens, all three could be taken out. So it is on hold permanently at the moment.

I pass through there everyday, a few families living, but not much.

The above description is not entirely accurate. The project was in its full swing in the first tenure of Kayani as COAS, but after a few months came along the severity of financial crunch, reluctance of the PPP Government to have the Army too close to the set of power. So the money in the kitty was then spent in upgrading the current Army GHQ in Rawalpindi from a 'Horse Stable Looking' into a modern day 'University-Looking Campus' with essentially corporate atmosphere.

GHQ current site in Islamabad has been in principal laid out with road work network completed for the support of the construction process to start in the future. Meanwhile, DEPO (Defense Export Promotion Organization) that organizes IDEAS exhibitions has been moved out of the Army Museum building next to GHQ and has been completely shifted to the new GHQ site along with the houses for the top tier DEPO DG and the second tier Brigadiers etc.

Secondly, there are absolutely NO security concerns of having the three Defense HQ's in such close proximity next to Margallah Hills as even the Joint Staff HQ and Ministry of Defense will also be placed in the same area sometime in the future.

There seems to be a space facility adn TOP secret facility there guarded by SSWN, as per wikipedia.

yes, there is a space research facility over there. it is reported that the earlier Ghauri missiles were tested over there and there are scientists doing research on rocket engines. the facility was set up jointly by SPARCO, KRL and NDC, perhaps the rumored naval version of babur missile is what they are cooking over there at the moment!

JNB Space Facility

The construction of the base began in 1994 and was completed in 2000. According to the NTI, the naval facility at Ormara has been used to flight-test solid-fueled Shaheen ballistic missile-series under development by the NDC. The construction of a space facility is unclear and unknown. However, according to science sources in Pakistan, it is believed that a spaceport was constructed by joint teams of scientists assembled from SUPARCO, NDC, and DESTO collaborating closely to construct a spaceport at the naval base to test fire Pakistan's sounding rockets as well as power thrust rockets into space.

On June 1999, Kahuta Research Laboratory led by Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, the JNB Space Facility was used to test fire a liquid-fuel power thrust rocket Ghauri-series ballistic missle. Jinnah Naval Base is a high-powered research facility where Pakistan's prominent military and civilian scientists work and conduct research in the field of rocket and space technology.

that is the reason that i think Ormara can turn into a great platform and home for our navy in future.
it is away from population and can be guarded closely!

Yes, it was not immediately after kayani came but sometime after.

As far as about the security concern, people that i know and they include high ranking officers, they said that it was a combination of multiple things, which included security concerns of all being placed in one place.

And i agree that now the GHQ has been given a good look, the outer gates are also in better shape than before. I knew a Maj Gen , a very close friend who lived there, and he said that it was very lonely living there, not an ideal place at the moment. The infrastructure has been laid out in principle, roads made, buildings are in place for a fair few families, so work was in progress.

You cannot move Air arm that far away.......i mean even 30 minutes matter in a battle. Karachi is Nearest to any Indian Fleet advancement, hence you need to get planes airborne quickly. You cannot lose the precious time in flying them from the west.

The move is based upon internal threats within the ranks of PN. Security clearance of a huge number of personnel at Karachi base and a large number of civilian employees, employed by numerous naval organizations has become a headache for PN.

Therefore, it was decided that it was easier to screen employees deployed at Ormara than to start cleaning up those at Karachi. Which will take time. Meanwhile the fleet remained at risk until such time when the of screening of civilian employees has been completed in the first phase.

This was a very costly move as the full maintenance facilities at JNB are not in place and all personnel would have to live aboard their vessels as there are limited facilities for billeting on the base.

"Imagery Date: 7/1/2009" is more important the other one is for copyright thingy.

then any guesses as to what ot could be, it is too large to be a tug, cant be a trawler,,frigates then?
